"We had a VERY productive section today. With the book, the student and I were able to do a lot of very good work together. She needs to work a little on her vocabulary, even in math, but I'm very confident that we can get her a very solid score!"
"Today was my first session with the student. We had a brief introduction to the layout of the exam and some basic test-taking strategies, like eliminating choices and focusing on the earlier, easier questions and only doing the last questions if there is time at the end. We did 10 questions from the synonym section of the Verbal Reasoning and 5 analogy questions. I encouraged him to take time thinking of the first word or the first analogy before moving on to the answer choices. I encouraged him to eliminate choices and to come up with a sentence representing the relationship between the 2 words, like , "1 is a bigger version of 2" for the analogies. He did a good job using this technique. We finished with 7 questions from the Math section. I encouraged him to use diagrams or tables to answer certain Math questions. I look forward to continuing to work with him."
"I specifically reviewed the verbal homework with the student. I noted that she is very good at making analogies. She really wants to know tricks to solving these types of questions, but I urged her that we should first focus on building her vocabulary before we get into the tricks. I advised her that after she is able to identify the roots of the words (prefix in, im, a, an means not, negates a word, belli- means war-like, etc.) and the words when used in analogies (adjective to noun, synonyms, etc.), we can turn our attention to the tricks. I gave her homework accordingly."
