Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over Chebyshev's theorem, multiplication and addition rules for probabilities, and how to find the number of possible combinations when you can repeat digits. I know that probabilities can be difficult, but the student should be fine if she remembers that "and" requires multiplication, "or" requires addition, and when to apply the different rules for mutually exclusive and independent events."
"We focused on probabilities, starting with simple then binomial and Poisson distribution probabilities. The student worked on two separate homework assignments (problem sets 3 and 4). His class is fully online, with most of the points coming from homework assignments, with one midterm mentioned. I think his biggest struggle was due to inexperience with the statistics thinking process and wording. Once I re-explained things, he understood the concepts better. I think he should do very well with my help."
"Discussed concepts and worked through examples of hypothesis testing. Explained the procedure to conduct a test and what to be aware of and how to conduct/set up the hypothesis test. Looked at rotational forces acting on a beam and torque in various problems."
"We went over PDFs, normal distributions, and the normal approximation of the binomial distribution. She seemed to have a good understanding of the ideas when they are presented, but is having a tough time interpreting problems. We will continue to work on that."
"The student and I covered various confidence intervals during the session. Specifically, confidence intervals around mean and proportion estimates. We also reviewed when it was appropriate to use a z-statistic and t-statistic along with sample size estimations. He is gaining confidence with this subject matter and was able to walk me through problems towards the end of our session. I left him to work through the rest of a homework packet he had and we will review that the next time we meet."
"Today the student and I talked through a couple of topics. He had a worksheet on prime numbers and factorization. We discussed finding primes and then used that knowledge to test divisibility and find GCFs. He did a great job at both tasks! We a half hour working on SAT math strategies. We will probably spend a bit of extra time on that this next week. Have a great weekend!"
