Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over a reading and a math section today. I think the student will do well on the test. We spoke about the best ways to eliminate wrong answers in the reading sections and how to make connections in the math sections."
"The student and I went over questions for the SAT reading and writing sections. Since we had been concentrating of math before now, this was somewhat of a refresher. He was very good with the reading comprehension and the paragraph improvement questions. He is good at eliminating choices for sentence correction as well. The hardest questions for him are sentence improvement ones, so we will work on that."
"Today we started a practice SAT, doing 2 sections and scoring both of them. We also covered general test questions and strategies and test layout. We will wait on practice questions for now."
"I began the tutoring session with the students by going over what the SAT and PSAT are like and how they are set up. During this session, the three of us worked on some vocabulary questions, grammar questions, and a few reading comprehension questions. They already understood about half of the grammar questions, and I helped them on the rest. I then talked to them about how the essay portion of the exam is set up, how long they will have to write it, etc. For homework this week I told them to each work on a practice test."
"I meet with this student today for our first session. She and I focused mainly on reading comprehension and question decoding strategies. We also touched on some math practice. The student is doing very well and picking up new strategies and concepts quickly. I left her with some practice work to complete before our next meeting."
"We started by looking over the practice essay that the student had written. He had formed a distinct thesis statement on the topic, and structured an essay that used two main reasons to support his argument. Some of the his individual sentences were excellent, as he used complex constructions and grammatical structures. We worked on clarifying some of his less clear sentences, and on altering language to avoid the passive voice. We also worked on his developing good, detailed examples that work to support his argument. Next, we focused our attention to the Reading section. He did very well with the multiple choice text completion questions. When he works carefully through each sentence, noting signal words and context clues, he can usually answer the questions correctly."
"In this session, we covered some big picture strategies for approaching the essay writing section, as well as some practice problems in improving paragraphs, improving sentences and mathematics. We did not review previous work, but I think the practice we intend for the essay writing will be effective. From speaking with the student and reviewing some of the problems, I think there are two basic areas where he can improve. First, when taking multiple choice questions, he will benefit from slowing down to more carefully read the questions and answers. Secondly, for the essay, we will begin shifting his focus from whether or not his essay is "correct" to approaching the essay scoring as more about support for positions. For practice, I assigned a practice essay, to be outlined and written with a not on the time it took to compose."
"The student and I started off our test prep this morning discussing the format, purpose, and general strategies of the test. We also started looking at the content of the Critical Reading section, practicing some sentence completion problems and looking over the passage-based reasoning material."
"Time was spent learning topics, questions and nuances concerning Percentages as a Math category. The student answered several questions in-between each lesson and strategies were optimized to his preference. Finally, homework was assigned."
"Today we started by going over the essays they had written. I think this is an area to focus on. Then we went through the math section they did for homework. After that we started through the writing multiple choice and ended with the critical reading section. We covered a lot of material and they are doing very well so far. For homework, I gave them a writing and reading section."
"We began the session by going through Critical Reading test corrections. The student has really improved, and I was happy to note the annotations in the text. We then devoted time to Math, including a mini lesson on handling new equations and using a box representation to understand fractions. We concluded the session by going over the SAT essay: the outline, the thesis, and the supports."
"The student and I met from 2:30 to 4:30. We went over a math section, a reading section, and a writing section. The student did very well on the math section overall. There was only one or two problems he missed. He struggled slightly with the reading section, but the reading passage seemed harder than normal. On the writing section, the student did quite well, but he missed several questions on the editing section. The student did not have time to finish the writing section, so I asked him to complete the section for our next session. The student informed me that he was interested in increasing the frequency with which we meet. Starting on Monday, he wants to meet three times per week."
