Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over the questions he missed on the verbal section of the test he had done. We discussed and practiced strategies for the analogies. For HW, I assigned him sentences using missed vocabulary words. During the latter part of the session, we started on the first math section. We discussed complex fractions and order of operations."
"The student got a 95 on her last test, so she was very happy about that. Today she was working on determining which fraction was bigger and ranking fractions and decimals in order. She's overall doing quite well with it, and I think that math is starting to come easier to her now than before."
"On Tuesday we spent the majority of our time studying for the student's history exam. We read through her review questions and I quizzed her on the material. She seemed to have a good handle on it. We finished with a discussion about radioactivity."
"We reviewed the math section of the test. We worked through different types of problems. I suggested that he take a practice test before the next session and time himself so we can figure out where his timing issues are."
"Today the student and I worked on math and science. For Math I introduced some basic Trig to him, which he picked up pretty quickly. For science we practiced interpreting information from the graphs and figures and not getting worried when he doesn't know all the terms. A lot of the information to answer the questions can be gleaned from the figures. For homework I gave him practice math questions and I reading passage."
"We focused on the student's translation homework. She is obviously a very dedicated and hardworking student, and I think the majority of her difficulties with the language come from the sheer number of verb and noun forms she needs to memorize. Once she got the hang of the translation, she seemed much more confident in her Latin skills. I'll try to find some ways to help her in memorizing all those forms."
"Today the student and I worked together on his final draft of his paper. He had a very strong start and did an excellent job transitioning from our pre-writing and outline to the final product. We talked through some of the ideas he wanted to incorporate in his paper and I helped him blend together the ideas a bit better. The final paper is due tomorrow so he will send me his finished product to look over tonight and I will be able to give him any final suggestions for his copy to turn in."
"The student and I went over his test review for his final, and he already knew a good amount of the material. We went over the few topics he didn't understand, like compound functions and completing the square. By the end he understood everything on his review sheet."
"Today the student and I continued to focus on the math portion of the ISEE exam. We paid particular attention to word problems, for example those involving multiple steps (working on how to use the language written to clue in on what to add, multiply, etc.)."
"Went through a mock scenario for a reading portion of the ACT, implementing strategies to use when find yourself running short on time. The student was struggling with some chemistry so we worked on heat equations and converting joules to calories."
"In this session we practiced art-related vocabulary to analyze works of art orally. We talked about specific works of art mentioned in class and applied the vocabulary to describe them. At the end we reviewed more words."
"He and I introduced ourselves and talked about his school experiences, his college application plans, and his previous experiences with the SAT. He told me that he has the most trouble with reading comprehension, so that's where we'll focus our tutoring, though we'll also cover the math and writing sections. Today, he completed a timed reading comprehension section, after which we went through in detail the problems he missed and discussed strategies, which he will practice implementing in future sessions. At the end of the session, we discussed his specific concerns about problems in which he can narrow down the answer choices to two options but has trouble picking out the subtle reasons why just one is correct. We will continue to work on this kind of problem in our remaining sessions."
