Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed congruent triangle theorems - SSS, SAS, SSA, AAS, and ASA - and when to use them. She did practice problems from a worksheet. We also reviewed photosynthesis for her biology test on Wednesday."
"It was all about FRQs with the student in this sessions. We practiced writing one and then talked two out. We concentrated on the topics that her teacher said would be possible FRQs, especially the agricultural revolutions."
"I created a trivia game with some basic algebra problems for the student. She did very well on most of them, but missed a couple, forgetting some of the rules of expressions. I left some problems in this area for her to work before next week and will bring more difficult problems the next time. My tutoring helped her to bring up some grades so that she could pass."
"Conducted over Skype; went through carefully all of the writings that the student had submitted so far to me for grammar, flow, and content; discussed ways to improve his writing both syntactically and in terms of content. The student will take changes and edits made, as well as general comments and ideas discussed, and send updated drafts of writings to me. I will make comments directly in Microsoft word and send back to him for final edits."
"The student had prepared with an essay and a completed SAT practice test. We spent 20 minutes or so going over the essay. I placed emphasis on carefully reading the question (especially words like "necessarily"). We then reviewed the SAT test. Her performance on the test has improved significantly! She nearly aced one of the math sections. The vocabulary portion was very strong, as was the reading comprehension. For next week, I have asked her to practice on another test and acquire the practice test material to begin working from. We discussed "giving herself permission" to achieve at a higher level on the SAT than her previously stated goals. "
"The student and I prepared for his social studies exam on Ancient Greek History. We then prepared for his social studies quiz on vocabulary from Chapter 1 (sections 1 and 2). We then spent the remainder of the time reading out loud. He made a 93 on his science test we prepared for in our last session. Great session!"
"Today the student and I discussed DNA replication in detail. We discussed the enzymes involved and each of their roles. We also discussed problems that could arise during replication and how the mistakes were repaired."
"The student and I went over his first writing assessment. During our session, the student took an additional writing test and an English section."
"The student and I spent the session covering waves in their applications to superposition, interference, and sound. For about 1.5 hours we went over basic underlying principles and theory as to what happens when waves interact, and what some of the key identifying components to waves are. For the remainder of the session, we worked on specific problems that she had been given as representative test questions. We didn't get to cover electrostatics as she had wanted to, but we will be able to discuss it more in depth next session. She was very alert and quick learning throughout the entire session. She definitely seemed to improve her conceptual understanding of the material. Great work!"
"We discussed in depth and practiced use of torque and other definitions of rotation to solve problems. We discussed corollaries between rotational and translational motion and how to use the sum of forces and the sum of torques to determine parameters surrounding equilibrium. We solved several problems practicing each of these techniques and reiterated the solution process."
"I gave the student a diagnostic exercise to determine his learning style. Then, based on these results, I suggested strategies to help him prepare for the SAT Reading Test and excel in his AP English Literature class. He learned 7 new words today from the SAT preparation manual, and he will learn 5 new words each day between now and Saturday. He is learning definitions and how to incorporate new vocabulary words into his daily speech."
"We reviewed the unit on Ancient Greece in the student's textbook. She read aloud and summarized each section while we answered questions and reviewed vocabulary words along the way."
