Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session, we continued with conditional probability and the use of Venn diagrams. We also went over the first test the student received back. Going forward, we will create a review guide tailored to the test style used for upcoming tests."
"I helped the student look over a study guide. We looked at SPSS output results and I explained how to interpret the output. He said that he was going to go through his textbook and we can go over more specific questions when we meet on Tuesday night."
"Finished the Quiz; Calculator functions refresher; outlook good for Chapter 6 section - normal distributions."
"The student and I met to continue covering the material for his next exams. My plan was to just teach paired samples t-tests, but the material went quickly and he was eager, so we covered independent samples t-tests as well. For the paired samples test, we worked through our own example as I explained the material to him. Since he remembered most of what we learned about single sample t-tests, he was able to readily apply that material to this new test and understand the material easily. He had little concern about this material. However, I feel that he will need to go over a significant amount of practice problems to make sure he understands the theory behind this test AND the differences between this and a single sample test. Independent samples t-testing is a bit more complicated, therefore we basically went through technique for conducting the test. We will need to cover the theory behind this test as well before he takes his exam. He seems able to work through this test with a set of data and the textbook, so practice will allow him to be ready for this on the exam. He has some exposure to all of the material that will be on his exam. However, it is imperative that he studies and completes practice problems before his exam on Wednesday. I gave him some material to look over and will be meeting with him Tuesday night to cover some practice problems and answer any questions or uncertainties that he may have about the material or the study guide."
"We practiced standard deviation calculations and using Excel to make a scatter plot. We also worked on percentages."
"We went over her homework, including qualitative vs. quantitative variables and scatter plots. We will be working on translating some words and thinking mathematically."
"The student scored a B- on his last quiz! We completed the first few sections of his homework involving z-values for continuous (non-discrete) variables."
"We reviewed last session, and discussed probability in a bit more detail. We began covering essential attributes of distributions - in addition to the mean, median and mode, we discussed IQR, standard deviation, and variance. We spent some time interpreting equations and notation, as well. Additionally, we talked about shapes and skew in distributions, and their effects on the various measures of central tendency."
"We continued working on probability and area under the curve questions to study for the student's test on Wednesday. I asked her to do some reading and practice problems for Tuesday."
"A review for a statistics test. Review of general types of questions regarding independent events and standard deviation."
"The student and I covered several of the chapters that would be on her test. Since then, she has taken her test and saw a 20 point increase from her first test."
"Covered Chapter 5: Discrete Random Variables; Binomial Distribution, Uniform Distribution, Poisson Distribution; Chapter 6: Normal Distribution."
