"Today, I had the student provide me with a short writing sample in order to warm him up. I also used this to see how his spelling skills are improving as we study word parts and concepts. We then used an interactive read aloud book in order to help with his motivation. He read along with an intro book. Afterwards, he completed a short assessment based on his fluency with sight words. I had him write down the sight words that he did not automatically know. He is continuing in his improvement but there is much work to do with these words. He is also showing that he remembers some of the common rules that we have studied before."
"Today the student brought a book to read that was slightly more difficult and had more pages. She proceeded to read the book quite nicely, going back to words that she had guessed at and sounding them out with help. When we finished the book, we played a game using the word chunks where you take letters or blends to start a word and find an ending to go with it. They go together like puzzle pieces. I had arranged them in stacks, and she picked endings with "e" and "ea." I told her to pick one stack of beginning letters and one of endings. I gave her 2 minutes to see how many words she could make. She went at it with gusto. We did that a couple of times and finally looked at the remaining letters to see if we could make any more words."
"We worked on reading the book the student is currently reading for class. We were able to complete 5 chapters. He only has one more chapter to finish the book. He did really well with his reading today and is getting better at sounding out words. He writes down the ones he doesn't know and is able to recognize them when he sees them again."
