Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"First, the parents and I went over the results of the assessments from the first session. I explained the meaning of the different levels the student is at and provided information about how to best work with learns at this level. I also provided a list of level "F" guided reading texts that would be appropriate for student to read. Next, the student and 1 reviewed CVC words. I introduced concept of CVC word families and student practiced making lists of CVC word families. Student was given a "CVC Word Generator Tool" to take home, that allows her (either on her own, or with family) to practice making and sounding out CVC words. Then I introduced soundboard and went over "sh" "ch" "wh" and "th" diagraph sounds with student. I read aloud a silly story that incorporated these sounds and student landed a game piece on the correct sound. Student needs additional help differentiating between "ch" and "sh" sounds as well as creating "th" sounds. The student and I then reviewed "magic e" concept and practiced sounding out magic e words with a long a sound. Session ended after the student and I read a level "F" text together and student correctly answered comprehension questions. Again, student demonstrated a deep understanding of the text. I gave the "CVC word generator" tool to student and parent to practice with at home. I also gave student a graphic organizer that encourages student to create a story from a picture-scene given. I will go over the completed story with student when they meet again next Tuesday. Student was enthusiastic about all of the learning tools given during the session and we both gave the session 5 stars!"
"We reviewed closed syllables and how to label two-syllable words. The student practiced blending and labeling words made up of two closed syllables. Silent "e" and vowel teams were reviewed based on his spelling patterns from the past several weeks. Words were practiced in isolation as well as in sentences by playing the ice cream scoop game as well as the "snowing" sentences game. He was also introduced to words made up of single consonants in the middle as well as open and closed two-syllable words. He did very well reading his words on his own. For the next session, I will prepare a file folder for home and for tutoring sessions with all of the letter patterns and rules we've covered so far."
"Today we read chapter 5, 6, and half of 7. The student did really well. He was able to tell me everything going on in the book up until this point. He also worked on a reading comprehension worksheet and he did a wonderful job with it. He was able to pick out all the important parts and answer all the questions about the passage. We also worked on some more sight words. There was definite improvement today. He is going to try to get through the rest of the book before Sunday. He was also excited to pick out a teenage mutant ninja turtle book to read at home."
