"Since it was our first session, we started with introductions and student and parent were both asked to share their expectations of the tutoring relationship. Tutor completed an assessment in order to determine student's literacy level. Student is currently at the middle letter-name-alphabetic stage, which means the following concepts will need focus in the future: digraphs, blends, long vowels, other vowels, and inflected endings. Student then completed a sight word assessment and has mastered the pre-primer and primer word lists, but will need further work on the first, second, and third level sight word lists. Student then read aloud a book (about a 1st grade reading level) and practiced sounding-out unknown words. Student is skilled at using context clues to inform reading practice. Student then answered comprehension questions and seemed to fully comprehend the text. Some additional tools were used during assessment and reading- student was introduced to the concept of CVC words and also how CVC words are often pronounced with long vowels when you place an "e" at the end. Tutor phrased this as "the e tells the vowel to say its name" and student and tutor practiced turning CVC words into CVCE words. Student was excited about reading more and increasing her skills. Tutor has also set up a reward system in which student can choose a prize after obtaining 5 stickers. Stickers are given after student reads a book with tutor and answers comprehension questions. Student was excited about this system."
