Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We talked about extrema, or a fancy word for maximum and minimum. We reviewed the process for which we can determine the absolute and local maxima and minima given a function f(x) on an interval from [a,b] or (a,b): 1) find f'(x) and f"(x) 2) set f'(x)=0 and solve for all values of x to find all critical points and all points for which f'(x) is undefined. 3) if f(x) is on a closed interval, test out the values of the function f(x) at all critical points, points where f'(x) is undefined, and at both ends of the interval. Call the largest one of these values the absolute maximum and call the smallest the absolute minimum. If the smallest value is negative infinity, say that there is no absolute minimum. Likewise, if the largest value is infinity, say that there is no absolute maximum. 4) evaluate f"(x) at each critical point. If the value is negative, the critical point is a local maximum, if the value is positive, the critical point is a local minimum. 5) Set f"(x)=0 and solve for all values of x to find all points of inflection. We continued with practicing problems to the end of our session."
"We covered integration. The student did problems from yesterday and seemed to do well. The student will do some additional practice in preparation for our next session."
"Review for upcoming quiz. Linear approximations and estimating error, absolute maxes and mins, and some physics application problems (kinematics)."
"The student and I spent time on both math and reading today. We played a multiplication and division game, we also worked on word problems which assessed a variety of skills and we also worked on writing which focused on describing a sequence of events."
"The student and I prepared for the upcoming Algebra 2 state assessment exam by going over problems from previous exams. She was very receptive, and by the end of the session, she was able to solve the problems correctly."
"Today we were able to access the testing system. A bolstered assessment was given. Specific skills the student needs to work on were given. These have been numbered in order to track her progress, and have been emailed to her as well as her teacher. Topics of study today were ALG1 and ALG2. Homework in ALG1 and ALG2 has been assigned to go through problems until mastered. Also to do multiplication drills 3 times through, tracking her time before Wednesday."
