Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Since it was our first session, we started with introductions and student and parent were both asked to share their expectations of the tutoring relationship. Tutor completed an assessment in order to determine student's literacy level. Student is currently at the middle letter-name-alphabetic stage, which means the following concepts will need focus in the future: digraphs, blends, long vowels, other vowels, and inflected endings. Student then completed a sight word assessment and has mastered the pre-primer and primer word lists, but will need further work on the first, second, and third level sight word lists. Student then read aloud a book (about a 1st grade reading level) and practiced sounding-out unknown words. Student is skilled at using context clues to inform reading practice. Student then answered comprehension questions and seemed to fully comprehend the text. Some additional tools were used during assessment and reading- student was introduced to the concept of CVC words and also how CVC words are often pronounced with long vowels when you place an "e" at the end. Tutor phrased this as "the e tells the vowel to say its name" and student and tutor practiced turning CVC words into CVCE words. Student was excited about reading more and increasing her skills. Also, student told parent and tutor that she is working on mastery of level "J" books. Tutor assumes this refers to guided reading levels, therefore student and tutor will concentrate on mastery of levels F-I books."
"We started out today's session by picking out difficult words from the story which I wrote on the whiteboard. The student seems to enjoy the challenge of tackling the "hard" words and then finding them again in the story as she reads. She read it with the greater attention and fluency than before. The story was a graded story which was on the beginning 2nd grade level. We finished with a game of making words off the ends of other words using little flip-flop tiles played with a two minute timer."
"I worked on poems and repetition with the student. The student's attitude was joyful. I focused on repetition of sound - alliteration and assonance."
"The student and I met for his tutoring session. We identified letters and numbers 1-10, and then we drew the letters and numbers. He is progressing very well."
"Today, we worked on a few different things. The student has to read a biography for his class, so the first thing we did today was read a few pages of the Tom Brady biography. We then worked on a summary exercise and a few fact checking techniques to make sure he's really retaining what he's reading. We moved on to memorizing countries and capitals for his History class for a little bit just to break up the subjects, and then we ended with chapter four of Tom Sawyer. He answered reading comprehension questions and wrote a very nice summary of the chapter."
"The student and I reviewed vocabulary and key concepts for her upcoming state assessment test in global history. The student applied herself diligently to her work, and self-identified key concepts that she needed to learn better. It was an excellent tutoring session."
