"The student and I talked about his needs and concerns for the test. It looks like Math and Science are going to be the sections that could be most improved, and possibly English. We went over general test taking strategies and also got through most of one of the Math sections in the ACT prep book. He will finish the math section for next time."
"The student and I continued to look at math practice problems, as this is his greatest area of concern on the ACT. We focused on geometry and trigonometry-based problems, as well as problems that presented known concepts in unfamiliar ways. We specifically talked about finding triangles and using knowledge about similar and congruent triangles, as well as when to use or not use formulas to solve a problem. Over the next week, he will complete at least one timed practice math section."
"The student bought the ACT test prep book, so the questions this week were more similar to those on the test than the questions in her old book were. We split our time between reading and science. She is doing very well with speed reading the passages and checking her understanding at intervals as she reads. Her comprehension was quite good as she read. She did very well with the "main idea" type of questions. We worked on creating a mental map of the passage so she knows where to go for each subject. We will also do more work on the process of analyzing those short passages once she finds them. She did very well in the science section. She works at a slower pace, but she had about 80% accuracy over five passages. We will continue to work on speed strategies in this section, but I feel good about where she is with it right now. We will also need to go over the "dueling scientists" passages since we did not cover any of them this week."
