Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the first part of Chapter 11: Congress, but spent most of the session planning the student's Textual Analysis paper. We went over the assignment, wrote an outline and looked at potential citation sources."
"The student and I worked on the political participation unit in her online Government class. We covered interest groups, the Presidential election process, and voter participation. The student wrote several essays, critically analyzing the Electoral College and whether it should be modified."
"I opened today's session with an exploration of and discussion of the Kraternyy Naval Base, a top secret Soviet base built inside a dormant volcano and which was used by the Soviets as a place for covert submarine operation and spying station against both Japan and the United States during the middle to latter end of the Cold War. I shared with the student two articles which discuss the importance of the base in depth and which have many pictures which show the base in fascinating detail. The rest of our session was spent on discussing, as per his prior request, the Lost Soviet Cosmonauts - mainly, the speculation surrounding the Soviet Space Program and all the speculation that remains concerning possible cosmonaut mishaps, experiments, and achievements. We paid special attention to the stories of Major General Vladimir Ilyushin, Yuri Gagarin, and Valentin Bondarenko. We examined each story in turn, the theories that persist, and then spent some time exploring not only the plausibility of each theory but also the appeal of conspiracy theories in general and how such sources of speculation can inform us about the inner political state of the government in question, as well as the social climate created by the government as well."
