The student has a quiz on 8.1-8.4 this week so we went over those sections. We covered: working with expressions with exponents, multiplying terms with exponents, and raising powers to powers. We were able to cover a lot of ground, and he should be good to go on his quiz.

We worked on problem solving in real world situations. The student had a math assignment but missed the previous day and didn't know how to do it. We found definitions of the terms. From this, he recalled the lesson and could complete most of the work. We also worked on history - European Imperialism. Again I showed him strategies to research using the index/ glossary.

Tutoring review by Meghan in Ransomville, NY
The student and I started by reviewing the test she took last week. She did know the material and solved the majority of the problems correctly. For the final problem, she ran out of time. I am having her take an Algebra assessment so that I can have some metrics on how she uses her time. Then we can work on time management strategies. She needs to make sure she knows how her teacher wants her to present her work and then use that formatting in her homework as well as on tests. We went through the final problem. She had some difficulty setting up the problem in such a way that it would be easy to solve. Many Algebra problems can be solved multiple ways and sometimes that makes the work more difficult. We talked about using methods that were more time effective since running out of time is common for her. We also went over her homework for the evening. She was working on solving systems of three equations. She was able to explain how to approach the problems. When we went through them, I reminded her about formatting and also suggested alternative ways to approach problems that may take fewer steps or otherwise make it easier. She and I didn't finish her problem set but she felt confident that she could finish the remaining problem on her own. She also let me know that she scored a 96 on her grammar quiz which is significantly higher than her other grades for grammar.

The student and I covered sequences, including identifying patterns, determining the equation for a sequence, and calculating specific terms in a sequence. She did pretty well identifying the pattern of a sequence, and we will continue to work more with finding the equations.
