Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Among other things, we talked about language politics and some of the issues that arise in gendering professions. We also discussed the movie Pan's Labyrinth, which the student is watching for his Spanish class. We then reviewed part of his homework assignment together. Next time, I would like to review specific vocabulary for sports medicine, as that topic comes up rather frequently. We didn't have time to work with a literary text, but I hope to get to that next week."
"Today we studied Spanish terms and created flashcards. The student was instructed by his teacher to prepare flashcards for the new unit. This unit is on clothing and accessories. He was focused and engaged in the learning process, and he appeared to grasp the materials that we covered. He has been doing very well during our recent sessions, and I can see improvement in his performance."
"Today we spent a lot of time reviewing things that we have already gone over. They seem to be learning well and picking up the new vocabulary. They also seem to be more interested with the games that we did today, even though they struggled at times. They should continue to practice, but they are doing really well."
"Today the student and I went over his strengths and areas for improvement regarding his organizational skills, Spanish language proficiency, and English writing skills. We did this so that we could prioritize what we will work on and what productive tutoring sessions will look like this semester. Specifically, he would like to work on using a planner, Spanish writing and grammar, and developing research topics and questions for his next English paper on bilingualism. For the next session, he is going to buy and bring his planner and bring any questions that he has about Spanish grammatical topics that his class reviewed between now and Monday."
"We covered vocabulary and a conversation. The student is always very positive about his tutoring sessions and prefers to practice what he is learning through conversations. He feels that conversation is an excellent method to help him feel more comfortable when having a conversation at work."
"With Student 1, we reviewed for her quiz tomorrow. We first defined all the words on the vocab list; I then created fill in the blank exercises using the vocab list. Finally, we used the list to pose questions to each other orally. I reminded her to continue reviewing the list until she felt she knew it well. With Student 2, we worked on strategies for improving her concentration and her ability to discern how and when she makes mistakes in Spanish. She has a good grasp on the language, but is missing several details with respect to spelling and sentence construction. We worked on strategies for listening for the details in the language. I reminded her to review how to tell time in Spanish, and next week we'll go over it again."
