Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Theme: La plage/The beach. We reviewed vocabulary from the past 2 sessions, and the girls are making excellent progress! Their enthusiasm is palpable. Today we worked on new words related to a trip to the beach: le soleil/sun; le parasol/beach umbrella; le ballon de plage/beach ball; le bateau/boat; ice cream/la glace; le saucisson/hot dog; le maillot de bain/bathing suit; la sirene/mermaid; l'arrosoir/watering can; le sable/sand, etc. I printed pictures (with labels for the new vocabulary) of Mlle. Kitty (Miss Kitty) at the beach and a lady bug for coloring after the lesson. The family will go on vacation soon, so our next session is the 18th of July."
"The student and I met from 8:20 to 10:40. We continued by finishing the last section of chapter 6 and proceeding to chapter seven, which involved work and kinetic energy. We worked on concepts including drag and air resistance. We also looked at kinetic energy in terms of work done on or by an object."
"The student and I worked on identifying tone for the entire session. I really tried to get her to focus on answering the question, "How does the author feel about the subject?" We went through this exercise with literature, test materials, and real-world applications. I'm really trying to get her to hear the tone in her head because I don't think she is unable to translate it into SAT wording. I still want to work on finding more diverse adjectives for tone, but I do think we made some progress."
"The student and I worked through a practice test together. We got through the first vocabulary section, the quantitative reasoning section, and the reading comprehension section. She did quite well on the vocabulary, knowing almost all of the words except for a few. The quantitative reasoning section was very repetitive for her, and she only needed help on problems involving working backwards or writing an equation and solving. "
"I introduced myself to the student and her parents, and we discussed the goals for the tutoring. The student mentioned that her biggest weakness was reading comprehension, so we spent the rest of the session going over a detailed reading comprehension strategy. We practiced the strategy together using a medium-sized passage and a longer passage. I also gave her some time management tips along the way. I ended the session by giving her homework (2 reading comprehension strategies plus a vocabulary book)."
"We went over the questions on quiz 1, regarding GDP, PPC, and the business cycle. We planned to meet again to discuss quiz 2. We discussed study strategies briefly. We will address the case study in a future session."
