During this session, we began exam review for the student. In math we did practice exercises in both algebra and geometry. In algebra, we worked to solve and graph equations. In geometry, we practiced with lines, angles, and triangles. Next, we turned to language arts and discussed the books that he has read this year, focusing on the central themes, symbols, and characters. We touched briefly on American history events from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s.

Tutoring review by John in New Albany, OH
On Thursday, we covered the basics of power functions. On Sunday, we reviewed for a quiz that would cover the last two concepts: quadratic function application and power functions. We first defined the power functions and learned how to recognize one by analyzing the function equation form. We saw that two parameters determined the uniqueness of a power function: the constant of variation (k) and the power (a). We also defined a special class of power functions: the monomial function. This class of functions have an additional restriction places of the power (a). A must be a positive integer. The next skill on which we worked was the translation of verbal/written statements to power functions equations. We focused on the words "varies," "proportional," "direct," and "inversely," Next, we graphed typical examples of power functions and described them using domain/ range, end behavior, asymptotes, bounds, etc. We saw that power functions exhibited four general shapes, depending of the value of the power (a). We also noticed the effect of the sign of the constant of variation. The last skill learned regarding power functions had to do with the generation of a unique power function equation from a written description and a given function value, independent variable value pair. We saw that we could determine the value of "a" from the description and worked on the method used to find "k" for the value pair. The student seemed to pick these skills up quickly. For the rest of the Sunday session, we practiced question types that I thought would be present on his next quiz. Power function questions should not be a problem. Quadratic function problems shouldn't either if he practices interpreting the results.
