Tutoring review by Nathaniel in Mount Washington, KY
I'll be focusing on algebra mostly in our future session, probably only going over biology for tests, as he seems to be having no problem with it now that he's all caught up. On Monday this week, I talked to his algebra tutor after school. She seemed to think he had the issue that a lot of students his age have where they don't understand how much math builds on itself and just want to get through the class. She gave me his test on solving sets of linear equations that they finished in class today for us to go over. We spent most of Monday going over it. I made him check all of his answers by plugging in. I've been working on trying to get him into the habit of doing this whenever he can. I asked him what he thinks he got wrong the most, and he told me it was the signs, so I think he's starting to understand where he's going wrong and will be able to take steps to fix it. He told me he currently wants to be an engineering technician, so I'm going to try to come up with some problems that could show him how important this is for his career. The second session this week, we didn't have much classwork to go over. I had a couple story problems involving stuff that engineering technicians might do. One of them was a little bit beyond what he'd been doing, and he was able to set it up and solve it with only a little bit up help from me. I gave him a few sets of linear equations problems to work on, and he made mistakes on a couple of them but caught them when he plugged his answers back in. We talked a little bit more about how, after he gets into the habit of checking his work and slowing down a little bit, he'll start to realize what mistakes he's making and could eventually start catching them as he's making them. He seems to be understanding the techniques well, it's just the execution that needs a little work.

The student and I worked on math and English. First I worked with him to understand the new concept of functions. He picked it up very quickly. We also worked on his group discussion questions for English class, and he did a great job coming up with insightful questions. We also planned for his impending English quizzes.

Today we covered graphing linear equations using the slope intercept form. We also solved applications problems using slope and y intercept. The student did well with these topics as they were mostly review for her and she had a positive attitude. We also worked on reviewing a language arts packet and her persuasive essay. She had really great ideas as well as evidence to back up her ideas.

Tutoring review by Christopher in Mount Washington, KY
Today, we finished the course, by looking at the flux law for magnetic fields, and then we looked at transformers, AC generators, inductors, and LRC circuits with calculation of the reactance and the impedance. Specifically, we started by looking at Lenz's law to determine the amount of power needed to levitate an average person using 1 coil of wire and then 20,000 coils of wire. And then we covered the flux formula and I demonstrated a step-up transformer made by having 3 coils in the primary and 7 coils in the secondary. To emphasize the relation, I then made a 1 coil in the primary and 3 coils in the secondary example and showed how the voltage and current have complementary changes which leave the total power the same. I then talked about how power is generated by turning magnets next to coils of wire to make alternating current flow in wires at a hydroelectric power plant. Next we talked about how the voltage needs to be stepped up at the plant, but is then stepped back down to go into a house. Then we talked about how inductors behave using flux law, so that they try to draw power even after they are unplugged, causing a spark at the power outlet. Then we went over how to calculate power in an AC circuit, followed by the equations for calculating the reactance of each component (resistor, capacitor and inductor) and then calculating the impedance from the reactances.

Tutoring review by Corbin in Mount Washington, KY
For this session, the student and I focused specifically on understanding scientific notation. His mom mentioned that he had the most trouble understanding the concept of writing numbers in scientific notation and converting back to standard form. He seemed to understand the concept of scientific notation but struggled on his homework to correctly answer all the problems. We practiced extra problems on the material and he seemed to grasp the concept better. He also mentioned that he struggled with adding, subtracting, multiplication and division of fractions. We also practiced numerous problems of addition and subtraction and finding the LCM. By the end of the session he better understood the material.

Both students and I had a quick lesson on solving for variables in equations, and order of operations. Afterwards we spent the time reviewing for their midterm over the first 3 chapters of their book their teacher gave them a few review sheets, and we focused on those to prepare for their test.
