The student and I worked on his math review in preparation for his exam on Tuesday. He needed some reminders on how to do problems and we worked specifically on the ideas that the roots, zeros, x intercepts, and solutions were all the same thing.

The student was supposed to have her test on polynomials on Monday, but the teacher rescheduled it for Tuesday. So we started our session Monday night by reviewing the important concepts she would need to remember for the test. She does seem to remember some of the important concepts and struggles the most with confidence. I have begun giving her problems and leaving the area while she works on them- that way she can't ask me questions or worry if I am seeing a mistake she missed. When I do this, she seems to get the problems correct. This is reassuring and we will continue to work on building her confidence in this area. We spent the second half of the session reviewing some of the past work in preparation for the final exam. She was quick to insist that she could not do the work, but after some gentle reminders, she seemed to grasp the concepts and was able to work through the practice problems.

Tutoring review by Megan in Fairburn, GA
Today we read and summarized the student's social studies assigned reading. He is becoming more confident in sounding out and attempting to say new words instead of pausing and waiting for me to say them. We need to continue working on strategies for finding the main idea and then selecting the key supporting details. He responded well to me prompting him with "Who, What, When, Where, Why, How" after every few paragraphs. He can re-read the correct answers most times, but has trouble paraphrasing. He is improving his comprehension though because when I ask Check for Understanding questions, he can usually recall the information. We are going to continue working on main idea and summarization.

Tutoring review by Leah in Fairburn, GA
The student and I met today to go over the re-write of her policy paper. She has to make various changes and explain why she is making them. We looked over some of the comments made by her professor and then went through each section to determine which changes would be made (and why). We focused on tightening up her argument and making sure that the issue she was addressing was explicit. We decided to delete some sections and rewrite others so that her policy case was extra clear and addressed the concerns raised by her professor. We also went over some of the types of questions she might be asked in her politics exam, although we will do a few more sessions, focused just on this in the following few days.

Tutoring review by Jennifer in Fairburn, GA
We went over double and half angle identities and how to find which angles and trig functions to use based off of the given information. The student was a little confused with the tan(2x) and tan(x/2) identities, but she understood how to use the identities with some practice. We went over more problems dealing with solving for an angle value when it is presented as an equation. We went over how we can isolate the variable similarly to regular equations and how to write a general form of an angle. I asked her to look over the next section on normal lines since she hasn't seen anything like it before. Then, we can finish this unit during our next session.
