Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, the student and I completed our writing/RC review. We will spend the remainder of our time focused on Math. I am very excited about her progress, but aware that we still have a lot of work to do on the Math section."
"Today we worked through another practice test from the review booklet. I let the student do 15 or 16 questions, then stopped to go though the answers and correct any mistakes. It was important to emphasize the strategy of finding the simple steps that will lead to the solution of the seemingly complex problem."
"The student and I continued studying for the SAT. We worked on the reading and writing sections of the exam, because he feels least confident in these areas. He has gotten much better with the grammar point since our last session, as he is better at picking out the mistakes and formulating correct responses before turning to the answer options. Toward the end of the session, we spent most of our time working on vocabulary, as this is an area in which he could definitely improve. Since he has not spent much time studying vocab, we focused on test-taking strategies for when he is not sure about the meaning of all the words."
"The student and I went over practice test problems. He showed strong improvement in this practice test, and did a good job of reviewing the problems he missed. We also studied vocab and geometry basic skills."
"With the student, I covered 6 complete sections of the SAT! We went over reading, sentence structure, vocabulary, geometry, algebraic patterns and equation, word problems, and interpreting charts. She has studied quite well, and honestly performed phenomenally when I was tutoring her. I believe that she is ready to take the SAT! She has put in a lot of hard work and I have to say this is the first time that I have been genuinely impressed by a student."
"Yesterday, the student and I went over problems in the old practice tests that he had missed. We also talked about time-cutting strategies. We started making an equation sheet for some common problems. The student will take practice test 5 for next time using these strategies and we will go over that test next time."
"Today was my last scheduled session with the student before next Saturday's SAT. We went over all topics on the test. I reviewed her practice essay and gave feedback, then we went over the math, reading, and writing homework she did on her own. She is doing a lot better on the math problems and did very well on the Critical Reading."
"Today we finished the Science section and started the English section. We got through four passages, in addition to my lesson about the six different things you need to know to conjugate a verb. Apparently she'd already gone through something like that in her Latin classes, but it was useful to her for it to be turned around and applied to English, instead. Anyway, I like where she's gotten to with the English section."
"We made it through an entire math section (including student produced responses) and a full sentence error id set. We started by covering the reading section from last night, which I think went better than previous attempts but has still not hit her ceiling. We have developed a strategy/approach for each question type and section. Now it's really just up to her if she wants to follow it. We did discuss test day strategy and I let her know that if she has a question between now and then I'm happy to help."
"We went through approximately 45 questions from a practice test today, over the course of things reviewing many concepts: tangent lines to circles, dividing polynomials, and others. Occasionally the student will misread a question and subsequently produce an incorrect answer, but this is happening less and less as we proceed."
"Today we took a practice SAT test. I am following up tomorrow morning with another session to go over incorrect responses."
"The pupil had taken a full-length practice test and scored a 2220, which represented a huge improvement -- in writing especially. Math and reading were consistently strong as well. We began with writing practice. He practiced outlining and preparing for a few essay prompts. Then we did timed practice of the writing multiple-choice section. He did very well, answering most questions correctly, including several difficult ones. We also practiced vocabulary. Then we set up a plan for him to feel prepared throughout this week, so he will be well-rested and focused for the SAT on Saturday."
