Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started out finishing the student's schoolwork on perimeter and area. We went over his math fact sheet. Then he read a story based on persuasion. The story was about recycling so I thought this would go well with his social studies work. Of course, he comprehended the story and did very well on the worksheet covering the story. We played a math game going over division. We tried division with fractions. He understood the concept."
"Today the student and I reviewed all of the verbs that he has learned so far. After this I taught him the general patterns for verb conjugations in Spanish and we verbally practiced with a number of different verbs. When this was complete I taught him the structures to say "I am going to" and "I need to". We practiced this verbally as well. To finish the lesson, we brainstormed a new vocabulary list for him to study while he is on vacation. He will not tutor for the next week. "
"Reviewed goals with the student and her mother. Discussed last SAT score and general test-taking strategy. Assessed where student is in terms of ability and how she is evaluating questions. Worked on critical reading section."
"The student is taking the ACT on September 7th, so we will use one lesson each from here on out to complete and review a full in-class practice section. We started today with English (writing/grammar), beginning by reviewing the writing errors checklist. She scored a 25 on this section, her target, completing it in slightly under an hour (she has extra time), and without checking over her answers. We then completed a detailed review of the section. Many of her missed questions occurred at the beginning of the 3rd and 5th (of 5) passages, so we talked about building in breaks to clear her mind several times during the test. She has plenty of time for this. Hopefully, by doing this and checking over her answers she will be able to improve to the 27-29 range on the actual ACT."
"Today the student and I reviewed measurements, all of which he had memorized! He also memorized his square roots 1-15. We went over converting fractions to decimals, then decimals to percents. We started diving into a bit of simple algebra as well, reviewing once again the order of operations. We reviewed mathematical symbols, and clarified any that he did not know."
"Today we discussed the concept of complex fractions in algebra and developed a proof for how we can handle these menacing things through simple fraction algebra. We went on to apply this to simplifying complex fraction polynomials. We also went over an algebra review worksheet for an upcoming algebra test. We discussed chemistry and the concept of acids and bases, outlining the difference between the three classification schemes for acids and bases (Arrhenius, Bronsted and Lewis) and why we actually need all three. The student applied this knowledge numerically to calculate the pH balance of a solution (and its complementing pOH)."
"I taught the student some more strategies for doing the science passages, including using the data presented to answer questions before reading through the experiment. We then reviewed several math concepts and formulas, and I taught her various strategies for approaching the math problems. We ended by doing about 10 math problems together."
"The student and I began to review for her final. We went through her review and completed all of the questions she had not already done on her own. She knew most of the material. I reviewed some of the rules for domain, piecewise functions, and using synthetic division."
"Topics covered with the student include simplifying rational expressions, multiplying radicals, and simplifying radicals with variables. Progress achieved was a better understanding and fluency in simplifying radical expressions of all types. Topics covered with the student include completing the square and simplifying radicals. Progress achieved was a demonstrated fluency in completing the square and understanding the steps."
"The student and I reviewed his grammar homework and spent our session working through critical reading passages and sentence completions. I quizzed him on vocabulary and reiterated the importance of knowing SAT vocab."
"The student and I went over the concepts section of his math practice test. We also went over new vocabulary words and he took a vocabulary quiz and did quite well!"
"The student and I reviewed some practice questions she had trouble with. I emphasized the idea of plugging in on questions where you are not given the "total". We then went over some assorted practice questions, focusing mostly on exponents and roots."
