Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Helped the student study for her math final. She had already gone over every problem on the semester's tests, and had little trouble with most of them. We practiced some she didn't quite feel sure about, but she in fact knew how to solve the problems quite well, and used techniques we had talked about before, such as splitting a fraction into parts to help solve or simplify an equation.
Instead of working more on math we talked about distance/time graphs and speed/time graphs, trying to make the connection between the slope of the distance/time graph and the value at the same time of the speed/time graph. She had largely forgotten the concept and felt anxious about not understanding, so I reassured her she can understand it, if we go piece by piece. We didn't have time to make sure she completely understood but I left the notes we made and she felt confident she could use them to study."

"We went over a practice test I had the student do and he did fairly well. He is getting better at reading comprehension so we spent most of the session going over the difficult math problems. We also went over a little bit of vocab, but not much. Overall, he is improving greatly."
"The student and I went over her lab report on E.coli and transformation in good detail during this session. I also discussed with her exceptions to Mendel's genetics, including codominance, Pleiotropy, and polygenic genes."
"The student and I went over all her homework this evening. She did her math worksheet and we played three rounds of the multiplication game. She reviewed twodigit by onedigit multiplication, as well as twodigit by twodigit. She is doing twodigit by onedigit without any problems. She is improving with her twodigit by twodigit. We practiced her spelling words by spelling them out with cereal. The student thinks that this is fun! We finished our session with grammar work. She had to find the definition of a word by using clues in the sentences."
"Tonight we did "si" clauses in Spanish, by reading the lesson in the book and then writing the key points out in his notebook. He seemed to know the difference between the different uses and expressions. He then did his homework from the workbook."
"Today we finished reviewing for her final she has Thursday. The material we covered today consisted of finding all the different angles and sides of a triangle using tan, sine, cotangent, law of sines, law of cosines, area formulas, etc. I really think the student is prepared for this final and should do well. These last few months I have been able to watch her grow in learning. She has come from a 44 average to a 94 average, a complete and total 360."
"Worked with the student on the chemistry of carbonyl compounds. We investigated how to convert ketone and aldehyde compounds into alcohols and vice versa, as well as how to dehydrate the site. Finally, we also touched on epoxide compounds and thiols."
"We went over surface areas of a cube, sphere and cone. We reviewed fractions and long division and how to carry remainders. The student promised me that she would rewrite her notes after class and we are planning on going over them the next session. Our plan is to spend half the time with new material and half the time catching up. She has made great progress!"
"I gave the student a list of vocabulary words to go over, and we reviewed those words and common usages. We also did more quantitative comparison questions, which she seems more at ease with. She still doesn't quite have the timing down, but I'd rather that she maintains quality rather than rush through and miss more than normal. She is doing better on practice exams than previously though!"
"We went over the course notes and PowerPoints to review for the final. We worked on Ch. 13: Federal Reserve system, Ch. 14: Money and the Economy, and we started Ch. 15: Monetary Policy. We were able to finish all of the review tests for Ch. 1214."
"At this session we began a new approach of focusing on practice MCATs, having already covered the most important areas for review for the student. We did a selection of problems together and then in a mode of guided practice."
"The student has started a new semester and will now be learning about electricity and magnetism. During this session we went over how to represent an electric field using field lines. We looked at how the configuration changed depending on whether there was one or two charges present, along with their sign. Finally, we also worked through a problem calculating the electric field and force on one charge due to two other charges. He appears to have a good understanding of these various concepts."
