Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began this session by comparing The Name of This Book Is Secret, which she has been reading this summer, with the Hunger Games. We discussed the theme of The Name of This Book. She continued to say that she likes the series and wants to read more of it, so we agreed she could do so if she reads more pages per week so we can finish the second book in the series."
"First student concepts: letter recognition, first letter sounds, writing upper case letters A - J, first 6 sight words. Second student concepts: first grade sight words, high frequency nouns, sorting by common logic, finding rhyming words, identifying parts and wholes. Third student concepts: third grade sight words, high frequency nouns, sorting including parts and wholes, things that fit into groups."
"The student and I practiced reading 3 different books, 2 of which she is reading in school. We wrote down, broke up by syllable, and sounded out challenging words in each of the books. We also reviewed word cards that she is learning in school. I think she did really well this week and focused on sounding out the words before guessing, which was great!"
"Student 1 completed her first full 10x10 times table. It took her 30 minutes to complete. Last week, it took her an hour to finish 3/4th of the table. We also did reading comprehension practice on one of her favorite books. Student 2 and I practiced phonics and guessing spelling of her favorite words."
"Today the student and I read a couple of books and worked on some sight words together. We also worked on color words and the student's hand writing."
"The student and I did a writing exercise together. We did a creative writing assignment. First, we "mapped" out the characters in the story. We listed their personalities, described them, listed their quirks, etc. We then summarized the story and took notes about the theme, symbols. Next, we discussed an ending to the story. We made bullet points and mapped out an ending. I then had him write the story. He did great and used good description, and examples from the text. I gave him a short similar homework assignment."
