Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we began the session by reading How Many Fish? This book repeats some phrases multiple times, so the student was able to read it quickly and quite fluently. After completing the book, we briefly reviewed last week's material on the letter "a" and completed another exercise focusing on "a". In this exercise, he read sentences that contained short and long "a" sounds. He read through the sentences and then underlined long "a" sounds in one color and short "a" sounds in another, marking 29/30 correctly. Next, he began reading Kick, Pass, Run, a book about football. While we were unable to finish the book in today's session, he was really becoming involved with the story and reading more fluently. When he saw repeated words, he was usually able to remember how to say them, which increased his fluency. When we stopped, he even asked that we finish the book next time. He worked very hard today, even through distractions."
"We reviewed for the upcoming Biology final, including evolution and cellular respiration. We discussed the terms convergent vs. divergent and homologous vs. analogous. We also reviewed the difference between trait variations and adaptations and individual vs. population scale. We then discussed anaerobic respiration."
"The student has made some really good progress. He is taking the ACT on Saturday. We worked today on reviewing the main formulas that he needs and on test taking strategy. If he makes sure to read the question and double check his work then he should do fine."
"We completed another math section and discussed some generalizations. She had some issue with graphing functions and ended up guessing on some questions but for the most part she's killing it. As the semester goes on and she does more math in class the techniques will only get better."
"We went over processes for developing study guides from reading history chapter overviews. In particular, we covered picking out keywords and scanning for the context of such words, as well as started to talk about developing a system for note taking. We also went over using drawings as part of note taking to help ensure that the student has taken in all the information. During the second half of the session, the student and I went over mind mapping and outlining for essay writing. We talked through and mind mapped the second half of his essay comparing empires, and then developed an in-depth outline for the essay. Both these seemed to be useful strategies for the student."
"Covered statement of cash flows with the student. I think if she can recall what buckets (operating, investing and financing) each activity goes in, she'll do great. Also reviewed how to calculate cash collected from A/R and cash paid from A/P. Formula is beginning balance + activity for the period - ending balance."
