Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student's assignment this evening covered the beginnings of numerically approximated derivatives and tangent lines. The student struggled with some of the instructions, but once I clarified things for him, the work picked up somewhat."
"Today we did a review to prepare the student for his test next month. Thus far the student has had a pre-calc review in his calculus class going over functions. We worked through his homework assignment and then went over the concepts questions in the chapter review. I had the student name all of the major function types for me and describe basic properties of them (i.e. domain, range, critical points). The student seems to have a good grasp of the concepts and has been doing well in class so far. I did ask him for future lessons to have his homework assignments written out and ready to go over."
"Today the student and I covered the chain rule. The level of progress was shown on some of the completed homework assignments and the level of comprehension when the student explained the concepts to me while solving the problems. The student again struggled a little with the fact the chain rule deals with the fact that it is a culmination of all the differentiation rules. This is very challenging and needs a lot of practice to get. However, after a short break during the tutoring session, the student was able to grasp the topics a bit more easily and understand the subject more easily. No concerns about this session other than the fact that the student just needs a little more practice."
"The student and I spent the session reviewing for her calculus test on Tuesday. We first went over how to identify discontinuity and limits from a graph of f(x), which she did well with. We then went over how to simplify equations to find a limit numerically. She learned how to multiply functions with a square root in the numerator by the conjugate to simplify. We finished by going over trigonometry limit rules."
"The student and I spent the first part of our session finishing one of his assignment that had to do with limits and continuity of equations. Once finished, we had extra time in our session which we spent going over transformations of functions because he identified it as a problem area."
"In today's session, we went over the basic rules of derivation with special attention to the chain rule and the quotient rule. We also reviewed rules for the derivation of logarithmic functions. We began and will continue to review the basic rules of integration, in preparation for the student's test on Thursday. We discussed the theoretical process of the calculus, in an attempt to ground some of the mechanical processes he is learning. We discussed asymptotes, limits, Riemann sums, and tangents. We talked about why derivatives and integration are mirrors to each other. We went over what a logarithm is, and why the "natural log" is so significant and useful in calculus. The student continues to be attentive and demonstrates aptitude with the basic mechanics of calculus. I believe that more practice, along with a stronger conceptual understanding, will help him with articulation and computation of relevant real world problems."
