Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student completed his third upper level practice test (from the study guide book). Specifically, he completed sections #3 and #4. On section #3, reading comprehension, he correctly answered 22 out of the 36 questions (61%). On section #4, mathematics achievement, he got 35 out of the 45 questions correct (78% -- Bravo!). We concluded today's tutoring session with vocabulary development. We reviewed the 10 vocabulary words in chapter 12. After the review, I gave him a review quiz (to check for information retention). Out of the 10 vocabulary words given, he wrote down the correct definition for 9 of them (90%). He let me know that many of the vocabulary words that we have been reviewing have been on the practice tests. He is a very bright student. He is always very attentive and focused on the task at hand. Thus, our tutoring sessions are always very productive."
"The student and I began the session by reviewing the exponent portion of the Math test. Next, we moved to plane geometry and geometry. She has a lot of prior knowledge on these sections of the test. We made a list of concepts for review that I will be emailing to her."
"The student and I reviewed math concepts, like graphing lines and quadratics, FOIL and factoring, and exponent rules. As we talked through the concepts, she remembered learning them in school, and her confidence in answering the test questions increased. We will continue to review these concepts, as well as introduce new math topics that are present on the test. We also went through reading passages. She tends to skim the passages, and in doing so, sometimes misses examples and details that provide a complete picture of the main idea. We will continue practicing these passages and focus on ways to keep her engaged in the reading material. Additionally, we will continue to work on her vocabulary. She is eager to learn through reading books and blogs, and I will think of a few recommendations and send them to her soon. Additionally, I would like her to take a full length timed practice exam sometime in the next few weeks. We will discuss this and the best time for it in our next session."
