Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"At this session the student and I continued reading "The Grimm Legacy." Since she is reading another book for school concurrently, she has only been reading it in our sessions. We read a chapter in which Elizabeth gets to know the character Aaron better, and discussed why the author would include a chapter like this in which there is not much action. She observed that it allows us to learn more about the character Aaron. We continued to discuss her theories about who is stealing items from the collection, and the pros and cons of each possible theory. We concluded with a game of Boggle with the second student."
"This session focused on two specific areas. The first area was a continuation of the student's reading skills. The student read the a chapter in the book, Invincible: The Chronicles of Nick. The tutor and the student then reflected on the content and the messages contained within the first chapter of this novel. The second area covered study skills and her approach to reading as a whole. The tutor provided suggestions for ways for her to increase her reading knowledge and comprehension. The next scheduled session is Oct 4."
"We covered annotation and how to pull main ideas from each paragraph in a passage. We worked through one passage together, and the student then did some independent practice which I reviewed."

"Reading was the focus of this session. We read 4 fiction and nonfiction books ranging from the independent level to the instructional level. With the nonfiction books, we focused on building vocabulary before reading so that it would be easy for the student to comprehend what she was reading. Before reading the fiction books, we worked on previewing the text to allow her to try and predict what is happening at each point in the book. After reading the fiction books, we focused on retelling stories from beginning, middle and end. The student did a great job with retelling and was able to recall important details without looking at the book. We will continue to practice this skill with a more challenging book during our next session. I left several books for the student to practice with until then."
