"This was the first time that I met with the student. She had done practice tests from prep books, and together we went over the questions she got incorrect, particularly in the verbal (synonyms and analogies) and reading comprehension sections. Then we talked about strategies for writing essays. I left her with practice questions involving analogies. During our next session, we will focus on strategies for working through analogy and synonym questions."
"We covered algebra and geometry topics, as well as test taking and time management skills. The student seemed to only need a refresher on how to go about solving particular problems. To prepare for his next test, I encouraged him to continue to review these topics and previous practice tests that he has taken."
"This was our final session before the student takes his test. I brought a strategy review sheet/check list, and before we practiced each section, we reviewed the strategies to use. He wanted to look at vocab first, so we spent some time finding mnemonics for the words he chose to review. Then we turned to the essay. He is a strong writer, so we looked at a prompt, and I timed him for four minutes to create a thesis, two examples, and a hook. It took him 6 minutes, but he had a solid, clearly stated thesis and two excellent examples, so we didn't even try a second prompt. For math, he completed two sections of two practice tests very quickly. From math we turned to synonyms and analogies. We spent the last few minutes on reading comp."
