Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student worked very well this session! He was focused, ask questions, and worked extremely well. We started with a link from a website covering a mathematics topic called "quantitative comparison" which is something he had difficulty with the first session when we first covered it. This style of question is on the placement exam and I want him to get used to the format. He worked well, and we worked through the questions together, reviewing mathematical concepts in the process. After this online work, we started using the practice book tonight. He and I read through chapters 5 and 6, reviewing the format of the test and some test taking strategies. We then looked at exercise 1 in chapter 7 and he was given 10 timed minutes to go through synonym questions. He finished in 4 minutes and when we reviewed he got 15 out of 20 questions correct. After this, we switched back to the internet and worked on two concepts: advanced grammar and commas. This work will help him with his verbal reasoning section 1 and essay grammar. He completed both sets of questions with 100% accuracy. Because the student was working so well and quickly, we were able to end the session with one more synonym exercise for chapter 7 and he completed the 20 questions in 2 minutes with 100% accuracy. He seems to understand his concepts in English and grammar, and I feel more of his struggle with the test will be the stamina of lasting the amount of the test time because it is a long test. In the future, while we will still continue to review concepts, we will also work on developing his test taking stamina through more practice exams."
"In this session, the student and I began by going over the diagnostic test that he took for homework and discussing what he found easy and difficult about it. He did a very good job on this diagnostic, but of course, there is always room for improvement. Next, we continued working on the essay section. He and I reviewed what he learned in our last session, and then we worked together to brainstorm and outline what we agreed would be a very good essay. In the process, we spoke more in-depth about how to choose strong examples; how to write stellar thesis statements and topic sentences; and how to write good introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions. Toward the end of our session, we began talking about the math section and discussing the steps to solving ISEE and SSAT math problems. For homework, he will write two timed ISEE essays using the prompts on page 453 and email these essays to me before our next session. In addition, he will read pages 342-350 and complete all practice problems along the way."
"The student completed her tenth practice test today. She showed great improvement on the verbal reasoning section. We reviewed 10 new vocabulary words, and I will quiz her on them during our next session."
