"I think it is very helpful that we get the chance to do her practice test, because the resulting score will give us a great deal of information about her progress to date (as well as letting us know what the most productive focus of our time would be for the rest of our work together). We were able to complete most of the exam! However, due to her circumstance requiring that time-and-a-half be given to work on the exam, we weren't able to get to the last two sections. I assigned her some homework to be completed for our next session. The next time we meet, we will begin by completing the exam that we started during this session, and we will use the rest of the time to review the work I assigned him today."
"Third Session. We talked a bit about college and reviewed how specific skills from the ACT (e.g. being able to read and understand anything) will continue to have importance. We then worked directly on the test. We began with reading, choosing a fun article (dinosaurs). He worked through the 10 related questions on his own under similar circumstances to the test. I then asked him to defend all of his answers and explain (preferably with textual evidence) why he chose what he did. Certainly he's improved at this since the first two sessions, but there is a long way to go until he'll reliably be able to answer with complete confidence. During the second hour, we approached the English section in much the same way, with similar results. He is getting quite good at distinguishing dependent and independent clauses. Other concepts, such as comma usage and transitions between sentences, need a good deal more work. Every few questions, he surprised me with the ability to completely justify his answer. Like with the reading, the goal is to make this happen much more often. Overall, a productive session. I left him with the simple assignment to read a short story."
"Continued to work through practice SAT exams to rehearse strategies and review different problem types, including essay, m-c writing, reading, and math."
