"Today, we focused on synonym and analogy drills for the main part of the lesson. The student stills needs more work broadening her vocabulary. She recognized some of the words in the drills, but her word recognition is still below what she will need to score higher on the test. She has a what appears to be a really good vocabulary study book that introduces words in context and offers synonym practice. I asked her to spend each day of her vacation working on one chapter in the book. In the last part of the session, I had her work on a couple of math drills. (She does better on those and I thought she could use a confidence booster). She missed a couple of the problems, and getting the answers took a little more time than usual, but she got more correct than she did on the verbal and we ended on a positive note."
"The student wrote an excellent essay for me today. It was brilliant, captivating, and extremely well written. I enjoyed reading it so much that I forgot to critique it. Besides one spelling error, there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. It is the best piece of writing I have ever had the privilege to read. Then we looked at the math section and went over the problems she got wrong. She had a few minor errors, and other times, she didn't understand the concept because she hadn't learned it, so I taught it to her, and she caught on right away. Then we moved on to the reading section. She also did very well here, and I urged her to remember to remove her own opinions and biases when she answers the questions. She should make sure the answer is in the passage, otherwise it's not the answer! Finally, we started correcting her vocab section and she did well, but this is something we will have to continue working to improve. I'm assigning her prefix, suffix, and root work to help build her vocabulary. I will see her next on Friday."
"Warm-up exercises focused on the area and circumference of a circle, which the student did very well on, and the remainder of the session's work centered on more advanced upper level SSAT mathematics. Skill sets covered in today's session: area of a circle, circumference of a circle, area of polygons, perimeter of polygons, and coordinate geometry. These exercises were timed and notes were documented. Over the next few days, I will prepare documents for reading comprehension and writing. Our next session is on Friday from 8 AM - 10 AM."
