Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, the student learned how to identify terms and combine like terms. She also learned the concept of distributing a coefficient across multiple terms in parentheses. She learned about the rule of "fairness" to manipulate expressions on both sides of the equal sign. I created a short worksheet for the student to practice distribution, combining like terms, and solving for x in an equation with only one variable. The student is attentive and caught on to a lot of new concepts in one session. By the end, she was performing most steps in the process of solving through substitution without any prompts from me."
"In this session with the student, we started to go over new topics in algebra which mainly dealt with factoring. First, we discussed the reasons for factoring and how it can help algebraic equations. Next we talked about how to determine the greatest common factor and how to factor it out. We practiced by reviewing his homework assignment and discussing problems from the book. He seems to be pretty comfortable with this topic."
"Today we covered direct substitution for polynomial functions as well as graphing these functions by creating coordinate tables. We covered common behaviors associated with these functions. We also reviewed synthetic substitution for polynomial functions."
"The student had some homework problems due tomorrow that I checked first. He only missed two problems and one was a slight calculation error. Then we reviewed for his quiz and test this coming week that will cover exponential graphs as well as graphs of rational functions. I also reviewed all the rules of exponents with him as well."
"In preparation for next week's chapter test, the student was given more practice on finding the square root of polynomials, something that was just touched on before. He was given strategies on how to interpret the resulting sign in the answer by analyzing the signs in the given polynomial. We discussed and clarified the terminology for a "perfect square". We also reviewed and worked numerous problems solving for variables for 2 simultaneous equations, using both the method of substitution and that of elimination by addition/subtraction. We also completed review problem sheet, working specifically word problems, an area which needs more attention. The student was very receptive and confident today, a pleasure to work with! I feel confident that he will do well on this test if he takes his time and thinks back on our sessions together."
"The student completed her study for section 4.08a and started the study for chapter 6. Over the week she will complete unit test 2, and begin new sections in Chapter 6. Her overall grade in the class should now be above a 90%."
