Tutoring review by Anna in Ravena, NY
The student and I reviewed a homework packet that covered sections 5.1 and 5.2, solving systems of linear equations. These two sections introduced the process of solving linear equations by elimination and substitution. He was asked to solve problems and to identify the method he used and why that method was used. We also looked ahead at word problems and solving word problems using systems of two equations.

The student needs to hand in a draft of his literature review tomorrow, so we went over what he has written. We discussed the overall structure of the paper as well as some editing issues. We also worked on the methods section of the paper. He needed direction about how to phrase the topics in the methods section. In general, he is doing very well putting this project together. He implements suggestions and guidance that I provide very effectively. Moreover, he is using the dictation technology he has with good success.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Ravena, NY
In this session, the student wanted to work through a study guide for an upcoming math quiz and also ask clarifying questions about the concepts being covered. Most of the study guide dealt with rigid transformations and identifying rotational and reflectional symmetry in shapes. His biggest issue was completing each transformation in a systematic manner to get the correct end result. We worked together on organizing his work and writing out all of the coordinates involved with the transformations so that he could reference them visually instead of trying to remember them in his head. Overall, he knew all of the transformation rules and, after a quick review, could discuss the pertinent concepts of symmetry.

Tutoring review by Ali in Ravena, NY
We had another really good session this week. We spent most of the session going through the student's homework and the associated concepts. We talked a lot about parallel and perpendicular lines. As has been the case, she was very quick to pick up on the math tricks and steps to solve the problems. I made sure, though, that she was able to use specific and accurate terminology to describe what she was doing and the logic behind it to help with the conceptual understanding. I would encourage her to go over her notes from the last couple of problems we worked, as they were more conceptual and involved higher order thinking and more planning. As always, she was very engaged and willing to work for the entire session.

I helped the student with a physics lab designed to introduce her to vectors and vector properties. She responded well to some real-life analogies, like taking different routes to school.
