Recent Jamestown Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Amanda in Jamestown, OH
During this session we worked on integration problems and piecewise linear functions. The student did very well and there were only a few parts of the problems she got tripped up on, but it had to do with the wording of the problem, not with the student's understanding of the concepts. She is understanding the concepts much better in integration than in derivation.

Tutoring review by Devon in Jamestown, OH
Yesterday was my first session with this student . Her class does not follow along with the textbook- instead it is simply made available as an additional resource and for homework problems. The material she had covered so far in class was scattered throughout chapters 1-3, and covered the basic intro to chemistry topics including accuracy and precision, scientific notation, significant figures, and dimensional analysis. She has a test today, which according to her will feature only math problems on significant figures and dimensional analysis. She is expected to answer in the format that the state assessment uses, which is writing the equation, plugging values into the equation, and then solving for the answer. Her interest and confidence did not seem high in the beginning; she told me that math and science are not her subjects of choice. As we began to work through problems, she seemed to doubt her methods, only to come up with the correct answer every time. She seemed to be good at following step-wise directions, although she was shaky on the conceptual reasons behind a certain problem solving method. We spent the most time on dimensional analysis problems for this reason. We discussed the purpose of dimensional analysis, and what practical situations it could be used in in real life. We calculated the number of atoms in her glass of water, and we calculated the number of inches in 2.5 miles. Once she got used to using conversion factors and canceling units, the problems seemed to become quite intuitive to her, and her confidence increased. I told her that she should practice these types of problems until solving them became like a reflex in the sense that she knew exactly how to attack them. By the time the session was over, she seemed to have become more than proficient in every concept and problem type we discussed. In addition to chemistry knowledge, I attempted to give her reasons to be motivated to do her best in the class. I told her that, although the topics currently being covered seemed uninteresting, they were necessary to understand in order to get to the interesting chemistry. She seemed to respond positively to my attempts to look at the class more optimistically. It was difficult to judge how much my efforts impacted the student from the first session alone, but overall the session went very well and she responded positively. I look forward to meeting with her again and continuing to build her skills, confidence, and perhaps even interest.

With the spelling bee not so far away, Mom and I worked together to complete a column of words. We focused on phonics and smaller groupings inside unfamiliar words (-tion, -ure, etc.) to help the student master the spellings of the words. He's getting it!

Tutoring review by Justin in Jamestown, OH
We covered cross multiplying and multiplying/ dividing fractions. We did some stuff with converting between fractions and decimals, and setting up ratios. We also did a few problems with number lines and word problems. Overall, I think the student's doing well with the material. The lessons come from her GED study guide, so it's really nice and structured. Next session we will do some practice with percents.

Tutoring review by Christopher in Jamestown, OH
The student and I reviewed a recent test, focusing on questions that had given him some trouble. Topics covered included molecular structure and intermolecular forces. Subsequently, we went over some concepts in thermodynamics, especially enthalpy, and clarified definitions. Most of the material that we worked on was descriptive and so there is not yet a test of understanding. Nonetheless, he appeared to have achieved a good grasp of the material and should be well positioned to handle the calculations that are associated with this material.
