Tutoring review by Elisabeth in Stallings, NC
This was the first tutoring session for this student and me. She and I first spent time getting to know one another. I learned about her learning style. We used a quick math survey to discover what she sees as her strengths and weaknesses, and likes and dislikes when it comes to math. She is very intuitive and has a good reflection of her own strengths and weaknesses. She and I focused on her 5th grade math work from today. She has a practice sheet that was handed out in class. We went through and discussed different strategies for the problems . The problems specifically focused on the four multiplication properties and mental math. She had her textbook and class notes to go along with the topic. She was very strong in her verbal communication skills. She did a nice job identifying the equations that match each multiplication property. We came up with some fun ways to remember each property. We used some highlighting and annotating strategies to break down the word problems of the practice. Besides the math content, we also discussed some organization and "math work" tips. She seems to be well organized in her thoughts and physical math work. She had a very upbeat and positive outlook throughout our time together. I also left her with a small dry erase white board that she can use to practice math problems. We will use this throughout our sessions together. For next session, she will continue to bring any math homework or materials from her class. I will be in contact with her teacher to get her input on the student's math strengths and areas of improvement. Besides reinforcing topics covered in her class, we will also be working on fractions, as she stated that this is a topic that she is a little muddy on still. In the future, she and I will make use of math manipulatives and some interactive websites during our session. I greatly look forward to our future work together!

Tutoring review by Randi in Stallings, NC
Today the student and I reviewed factoring by completing the square. We reviewed the steps involved in this type of problem, and he completed many on his own. We also reviewed rules regarding reducing terms with radicals. We also worked on solving systems of equations. There are several methods for completing this type of problem, and we reviewed two of them. This topic builds upon the ability to factor quadratic equations. The student has an excellent base understanding of all the topics so far. He works hard to practice many problems in each area so that he feels completely comfortable handling them.

The student and I reviewed for an upcoming exam, mostly going over lines of sample code and estimating the likely output. In particular we did several examples of nested for loops and estimated their purpose and likely results. In connection with this we talked about loop invariants and what is held constant through every loop.

Tutoring review by Alexandra in Stallings, NC
Today, I helped both students with their homework. Student 1 had a social studies assignment on the Trans Pacific Railroad. He did well. He needed some assistance creating complete sentences in the past tense. He was able to complete his math homework independently and only needed assistance with one problem. Student 2 completed his math homework on his own prior to my arrival. We reviewed the concepts on his homework. After our quick review, he was able to correctly answer the questions independently. We then completed note cards to use for his upcoming social studies exam on Friday. He demonstrated 80% accuracy on the key terms he put on his notecards.

We went over the geometry and algebra homework sheets I'd assigned the student on Saturday. He had done a good job on the homework. He had some trouble adding up algebraic expressions properly and had a tendency to leave off the variable when adding like terms a few times. We will address this further in our next session. We will meet again on Wednesday for his final session before he sits for the SSAT.
