Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session, the student finished the essay. The student expanded on the anecdote from visiting the school to include details about the community and a casual, intellectually engaging debate among engineering students. Then he edited to make these apply back to the central theme of the essay. Next, the student wrote about an interest in software and added the potential to work with a professor who focuses in this area. The student added detail to consider the personal relation to this an article by this professor. Finally, the student added his extracurricular interests, and we cut the essay to meet the word limit. This essay is looking great!"
"During this second session, I helped the student to revise her remaining two essays. The first essay prompt was related to describing the biggest achievements and the second essay was more creative, asking the student to describe what they would do in an alien encounter. Her writing improved with these two essays significantly, particularly with the third essay. She demonstrated a talent for fiction writing in the third essay, and I would definitely encourage her to continue!"
"We worked on a research plan for the student's film paper. We also started organizing his theology paper. Last week, we came up with a study plan for his Psych test, which he did not complete. The test is today, so we discussed how to avoid that problem in the future."
"We are continuing practice with planning and writing a well-structured paragraph. For the student, we are working on a multi-paragraph essay. The boys have great ideas about what they want to write, and they did well getting out their ideas on a graphic organizer. Student 1 is making some progress in connecting ideas. Student 2 does well at coming up with unique ideas to a prompt."
"We did another reader's theater piece (short play), which the student did quite well with in terms of both fluency and accuracy. We also worked on words with the suffixes -ant, -ance, -ent, and -ence, because they have the same rules that govern which suffix a verb gets when you are turning it into a noun or an adjective. We also did some dictation."
"The student and I reviewed his resume and cover letter. We discussed how to improve those items. In addition, we practiced interview questions for his impending interview. For homework, he will tell stories with his interview question responses for a Friday mock interview."
