Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We completed her science review and her math homework. She shared test results: science test with a B- and two math quizzes; one was a B and the other an A."
"We continue to catalog his overall goals and progress as this school-year reaches what I like to call "the home stretch". We engaged in a challenging exercise for his Math class that required us to solve for the rate of change for a dozen or so problems in order to decode a message. There were a couple rough spots, but we succeeded in the end, and I told him he often shows good fortitude like that. Next, we went over the chapter in his Spanish book that will be tested on Friday. He repeated and copied down Spanish words and phrases as I read them to him, then I gave him a few sentences to translate for more practical application."
"In today's session, I spoke to the student and encouraged him to use his agenda to write what sections of homework he has to do. He is doing better on his exams compared to the past. I find that he struggles most with understanding concepts in math. He knows how to plug 'n' chug into the formulas, however, he doesn't know how it can be applied in a different context. I spent a great deal of time explaining to him how volume works and explained how the volume of each shape is dependent on the base shape. Also, another aspect that holds him back is that he is not retaining the information taught in previous months/years. In our next session I plan to go over past material to help him further understand the concepts he is learning."
"Today, we began the tutoring session with Math. There was very little work to do because yesterday was completely dedicated to Math. After this, he worked on an English assignment, which he did not struggle with at all. Additionally, he worked on a History assignment about the Civil War. He had a more difficult time with this assignment because he had trouble finding pertinent information. After I helped him with his search for Civil War facts, the rest of the assignment went well. He has a good idea of what assignments he needs to be working on for the rest of the week, so I am confident he is on track with his school work for the remainder of the week."
"We discussed the student's planner and what assignments she has for the week. Next, we worked on her English homework in a grammar book. She learned the difference between common nouns and pronouns, and when to use an apostrophe on possessive nouns. Finally, we finished up the session by studying Science for a science retake quiz on labeling parts of a cell. The student did really good today!"
"The student had a better session this time. He seemed very open to doing his work and calmly did all that I asked him to. He completed several assignments, and he did so without complaint. Also, he's gotten to the point where he organizes his backpack without me even asking which is great!"
"We studied for his World Studies test. We went over what a strong, detailed index card should look like, how to prepare for essay test questions, and how to effectively study using the index cards."
"In today's lesson I mostly helped the student outline his research paper on autistic people and their ability to function in the work world. We worked on the research question and the introduction and I helped him look for some relevant books at the library. I also helped him finish his paper on the Oklahoma City bombing."
"We reviewed the past week study schedule and made adjustments. We also reviewed his agenda for the past week. The student's goals for the upcoming week were also highlighted and added to the agenda book for the current week. We also developed a week by week project plan for his iMovie project which is due on 3/18 and included the milestone components in his agenda book."
"Student A finished up a worksheet and corrected a math quiz. Student B had an oral book report over Dr. Doolittle, and so she figured out how she wanted to decorate her poster board, as well as what her "pitch" to her classmates would be about why they should want to read the book. We then practiced her reciting her report."
"We began the night's session by doing our standard review of outstanding homework/projects. She has two assignments to complete this evening for chemistry and humanities. She projected an hour and half needed to finish both. We also reviewed goals in the areas of home responsibilities, academics, and social time. She noted all areas on schedule."
"Tutor reviewed previous assignments left for practice. Practiced how to complete math constructed responses in preparation for state assessment. Left two practice prompts to complete. Reviewed writing prompt with student for ELA. Practiced factoring and simplifying expressions."
