Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Went over a reading section that the student had done, then covered math and writing. In reading, his biggest need is to focus on questions that ask the reader to guess at the author's intent or meaning behind a specific passage. He does consistently well with writing. For next time, he is finishing the practice admissions test we started."
"The student did a fabulous job on the reading section and solid work in math. Her problem is going to be time; I think that for the March test, we'll be able to get her in good shape time-wise with practice."
"We went through an entire SAT reading section for the session to talk about strategies and practice the critical reading skills necessary for the test. At the end we discussed the student's essay from last week."
"The student and I began by reviewing some of the verbal question sets she had completed. She then did an additional new set. She is performing well on these sets. We then turned to math, where we finished our initial review of basic concepts and began to review algebra via practice problems. We will continue with algebra during Tuesday's session."
"We mainly focused on SAT writing, going over the essay that the student had written. We spent time thinking of ways to improve the sentence structure, the general evidence and support of the essay, and the general essay structure. All in all, she is on a good path!"
"We went through a reading section and I explained to her different techniques to save time. I also explained to her what they were testing (not to assume things; only base answers off of what is in the text, etc.). We then started to work through a multiple choice math section. Next time we are going to work on a grid in math section."
"The student and I covered reading comprehension and grammar. We discussed grammar and literary trends, as well as SAT question trends and strategies. As for homework, we discussed a list I had of several books chosen for their paragraph/sentence structure and thematic complexity as well as 'un-dryness.' He will begin a regular and intensive reading schedule to pick up his language skills. As for Math, tomorrow we will walk through the math sections he did to gauge what his strengths/weaknesses are. If we have time, we will also walk through the Writing section."
"We learned how to critically focus on reading passages. The student is attentive in the technical aspect of reading. We reiterated the importance of critical understanding of a passage. He has improved on his vocabulary effort!"
"The student had done part of a practice test and she felt like she needed some practice with the math. First we looked at some geometry problems and practiced using common-sense approaches to confirm that the mathematical modeling was appropriate. We then turned to some critical reading questions, talking about strategies to analyze the questions and passages in the clearest, most organized manner possible. She seemed to respond especially well to this analytical work. She will take a full practice test before the next session, in which we plan to focus on her essay."
"We worked on strategy/psychology concepts (including reading a couple of studies) and then went over his most recent test -- he did really well, improving by 100 points in math and 140 in writing. We will focus on math leading up to the next test."
"The student is making steady progress and is very consistent from test to test. She has excellent time management skills and utilizes good guessing strategies."
"The student and I concentrated on Organization and style choices in the critical reading section today. We looked at both humanities and natural science passages and examined strategies for analyzing organization and style. He did very well today, and I look forward to learning his recent scores Wednesday."
