Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student and I spent 1.5 hours reviewing short passage questions. We then spent the last thirty minutes talking about common grammatical errors on the writing section."
"We reviewed the student's diagnostic test and worked through the problems that he missed. I tested him on his vocabulary words and we practiced sentence correction problems."
"Last session. Went over final math fundamentals. I will need to email her a cheat sheet of all the strategies covered."
"For the first session, we went over the student's practice test. Our goal was to cover general PSAT test-taking tips and see what areas he might need the most help in."
"8/19 PSAT goals: The student especially wants to work on math, to get a scholarship-worthy score. We briefly reviewed a few sample questions from each of these sections: Sentence completion: worked on clue words and triggers Critical reading: discussed the importance of "reading between the lines" Sentence improvement: worked on "tricky" grammar and punctuation Identifying sentence errors: discussed not falling into the "no error" trap Paragraph improvement: discussed similarities with sentence improvement and difficulty of "abstract" structure questions I then chose select questions from the first diagnostic test to get a representative sample of the student's proficiency. We decided that for each section, she would do half the total number of questions and be given half the regular time, so the total initial test would take roughly one hour. I timed each section and simulated test conditions such as writing your answers on a separate sheet and not being able to move on to the next section until the time is complete. Overall, her scores were: 17/26 for Critical Reading, 4/20 for Mathematics, and 11/22 for Writing Skills."
"Reviewed preliminary admissions test writing and reading sections, focusing on identifying sentence errors and long passage based questions. The student learned a step-by-step process for solving problems and other test-taking strategies."
"In our session we focused primarily on writing and reading, since the last few sessions have been heavily math-based. The student did extremely well in both the writing and reading section. The only questions she had difficulty with were those concerning parallel grammatical structure. I further explained this specific topic and she seemed more comfortable with it. The few math questions we did were also better for her. She is coming into her own understanding of how to approach math problems."
"We focused on vocabulary development in today's session; practicing going beyond rote memorization by using the vocabulary in context."
"We went over the homework from last time. Then we read about three new test tactics and did some corresponding practice questions for each."
"We went over the questions that the student had from last year's test. Then we worked through a critical reading sections, a math sections, and started in the next critical reading section."
"In preparation for a mock PSAT the student would be taking, we went over Improving Sentences again and looked at the Improving Paragraphs questions. At the end of the meeting, we also practiced the Vocabulary questions from the Critical Reading section, and discussed context-based strategies for narrowing answer choices. This session was mostly a reinforcement of language skills cultivated in the previous meeting; next session will look at the results of the mock test and introduce new material as time allows."
"The student is obviously gifted and doing well. She has already scored a 220 on the preliminary admissions test and has done a ton of practice tests and studied a lot. We're not working on math because she gets practically perfect scores every time, so we focused on critical reading and grammar. I think the best way I can help her is to build her confidence. My homework for her (besides vocab flashcards) was to take the verbal portion of a practice test and time it."
