Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began by talking about Reading Comprehension today. I'm having the student assemble a list of specific questions for me, based on questions on which she had asked for help on. We reviewed several questions she had from the averages problems. We then worked on standard deviation, of which I assigned my standard subset. We then worked on variables. These are harder, so she will need to carefully do all 20 for homework. I also assigned two essays and a small review section of selected fraction problems."
"For the Math section, we practiced strategies that are useful for any Math question, as well as looking at specific review for coordinate geometry. For the English section, we worked on sentence completion, sentence equivalence and practiced general strategy. We also talked about useful ways to memorize vocabulary and determine the meaning of unfamiliar words."
"The student and I had our final session today. We spent the session working on verbal questions (one blank, two answers) as well as some reading comprehension. I have seen improvement in both areas, especially in verbal. With the amount of effort she has put into her practice, I'm confident that she will do fine on her test this weekend."
"Today we did some final review of strategies and concepts - finished reviewing the practice test that the student took and went over probability concepts. It's been such a pleasure to work with her! Good luck on your test and all your upcoming adventures!"
"We went over the essay setups and how to write them. We practiced organizing them. Tomorrow, we will go over more practice essays and will dive into the math concepts. He is fun and very knowledgeable. Refreshing to work with."
"The student and I started by reviewing and editing her resume for job and admissions applications. Then, we moved to the math section of the assessment test. We did practice problems that covered number definitions. We also practiced problems that require factoring quadratic equations, and went over exponent rules and problems."
"The student and I primarily worked on the argument essay component of the analytical writing section of the GRE. We began by having her live-write on one of the book's prompts. In five-minute increments, we broke down the essay and talked about how she could improve. During this time, we talked about details, transitions, and expanding an argument. Her work produced around a 4 in quality. Then, she completed another argument essay in a full thirty minutes. She earned a 5 on this piece, which is wonderful growth. As long as she can remember to expand on her points and connect them to research/studies, she should do very well. With our remaining time, we went over a section of the math. She still has trouble abstracting the concepts, so we talked about how to find exceptions to determine quantities."
"The student and I worked on several practice problems today, including basic algebra problems and translating word problems into algebraic equations. We used some online learning tools to practice simple algebraic problems and she will complete more of these on her own. We also specifically worked on interest rate problems and by the end she had a good grasp on them. We also completed medium difficulty geometry questions together, and she will complete another practice set of these medium difficulty questions before our next session."
"During our session, we reviewed the homework assigned during the last session. Then we worked on math concepts that would be fundamental to the GRE and the state assessment. We went over order of operations and discussed strategies for simultaneous equations (systems of equations). These were accompanied by a number of exercises, which the student seemed to master as the session went on. We also went over some verbal concepts. We started his word list, which will be an ongoing and cumulative list of important vocabulary for him to practice. Since the GRE especially tests vocabulary, I thought it would be important to start practicing and memorizing now. We did a quick review of the parts of speech and agreed to meet on Wednesday to continue our work."
"We reviewed the math portion of the GRE today and set out a general strategy for studying for the test during the upcoming weeks. We identified apps to study for the GRE verbal as well."
"Today we went over the general format of the GRE, section types and lengths, question types, and adaptive testing. We then did some study skills for the vocabulary. Next, we began our math review. This consisted of properties of numbers, PEMDAS, multiplying and dividing fractions, simplifying fractions, simplifying square roots, weighted averages, and translating word problems into mathematical expressions."
