Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed concepts for the science test which is tomorrow. I quizzed the student on definitions which she had worked on memorizing."
"Today the student and I went over all the lessons of her science chapter which included Bernoulli, Pascal, and Archimedes' principles. We also did more practice on equations which the student was tested on the next day."
"During our session today, the student and I did a comprehensive review for his science test tomorrow on matter (chapter 1). We went through the Chapter Test in his textbook, as well as through his class notes. He showed a very good understanding of the material and I think he will do well on the test. Next, we reviewed for his math quiz tomorrow. The quiz is on absolute value and adding and subtracting integers. We did several review problems and I created a mock quiz for him based on the review provided by his teacher. He got every question right. I reminded him to always check his answers, especially those with negative signs and absolute value. I think he will do well. In the last 30 minutes of our session, the student and I went through his SAT Writing and Reading book. We discussed the different parts of the test, a few strategies for test taking (like process of elimination), and went into detail about the answer completion questions. He understands the strategies for answering questions and has completed some of the practice problems in the book. We will continue to work on SAT prep as the school year goes on."
"Test study guide on scientific notation and significant figures. English writing assignment on book argument. Math assignment on ratios and proportions"
"We continued with the new science unit, which was about body systems and muscles/tendons/etc. We also worked on language arts, in the arena of italicizing and quotation usage."
"We went over previous math mistakes, and the student finished his Mandarin homework. Spent some time on working out the science concept: proton, neutron, and electron."
"I met with the student to work on elementary science and math. We tackled the worksheets and finished strong. I provided him with a homework assignment to help reinforce the fundamentals of problem solving and critical thinking. We will continue to work on these important skills throughout the coming weeks."
"The student was chosen to participate in more challenging science tests due to his superior performance. We reviewed material for his chapter 3 science test which was about different types of energy including kinetic, potential, sound, mechanical, etc. The student knew the material well, and we worked on some higher order concepts to help him prepare for his exam."
"The student had received a low score on a science quiz. We spent most of the hour reviewing the quiz and going over what he had gotten wrong. The quiz was over position, speed, velocity, and acceleration. A few of his mistakes were about units (not having acceleration as seconds squared, etc.) and others showed that he didn't really understand the definitions. I had him explain the definitions. He kept wanting to use the formulas, and it was messing him up. For example, he knew that speed had to do with position because position is part of the formula, but he kept wanting to define speed as position. When I told him to explain what speed meant without using the formula, he said, "How fast something is going." Exactly. The definition hasn't changed, we just added how to calculate it. He gets tripped up when he loses sight of his background knowledge. Going forward, we will work on hammering home concepts so he better understands what questions are asking for."
"We continued working on writing skills and MLA format. We also completed and revised his essay/literature review on salt water boiling points."
"We outlined a forensics chapter and finished a worksheet on the differences between the North and South of the US in the years leading up to the Civil War."
"Student is studying for a genetics and probability test. Reviewed genetics, alleles, and Punnett squares. Also reviewed pre-algebra concepts that he has been struggling with."
