"He has a test tomorrow, so we went over his last quiz that he got an 80 on. He had four problems out of 14 that were incorrect but some were just partly incorrect. He knew most of his mistakes as soon as he got the graded quiz back. Then we spent the rest of the time reviewing for the test by doing similar problems from out of the textbook. I would give him a problem and see how well he would do it. If he got any wrong, I would give him another one like it until he got it correct."
"This was my first meeting with the student. She had brought with her some sample questions from a previous exam. We went through those. We spent some time trying to gauge her skill level with the presented material so we'd know what to focus on. The topic covered specifically were: finding the fraction/decimal value using an image, probability, exponents, number patterns, ordered pairs -algebra, and inequalities on a number line. The student has some work to do regarding some math fundamentals i.e. adding and subtracting negative numbers, also how to handle +/- signs with the different mathematical operations. We will be working on some of those things next session."
"Today, we continued to go over the basic concepts of algebra. We also worked on some of the sample problems, and for next time I left him a few more to do. He has improved on positive/negative numbers."
"In this section we reviewed the student's packet for finals. The sections we covered were quadratic equations, lines, evaluation functions and also a few word problems. As he started recalling his past assignments, he became more and more attentive to the material. I told him to study his past assignments through the semester. He will go through the rest of the packet and next session I will review it with him."
"The student has her written final tomorrow and her multiple choice final on Friday. She also got some more practice problems so we went over the packet and all her class notes for one last review. She seems to be more than ready for this final and will review some of the formulas."
"We worked on the student's homework and then did several additional problems from the current unit and started discussion about the upcoming unit. We will continue to build his confidence as well as his knowledge."
"We went over polynomials. This covered identifying the lead coefficient, the degree of the polynomial from both the written form and the graph. It also covered adding, subtracting and multiplying polynomials as well as factoring them."
"Today the student and I went over Functions and Algebraic expressions. This was something he has previously had trouble with, but this week saw a lot of improvement. Each question presented him with a formula, defined the variables, gave values, and asked to solve for one of the missing variables. Following this pattern a few times, he got much better about understanding the variables and how to deal with them. We got through many more problems this week than usual."
"On Monday we went over starter problems that mainly had to do with finding the factors by making an expression equal to zero. We went over the factoring process, as well as the quadratic equation and did the examples that I left for her last week. There was also another word problem in her starters that had to do with mixing percentages of a solution, that she definitely needs more practice with. I left her with 4 distance and rate word problems to do on her own that we will go over on the next session."
"We started the session by going over the problems the student had with her homework. There weren't a lot, she is still doing a great job. We ended up covering the next three sections during the rest of our section. She picked up on these next three sections quickly. We did the odd problems from section 56 together and she is doing the problem set from 57 for homework."
"The entire lesson was focused on how to manipulate exponents on variables. He was doing very well on it, I was rather impressed. I think I will start teaching him Calculus soon. Next lesson will focus on Physics and orbits."
"The session focused on reviewing current lessons and the applicable homework along with reviewing topics from the first semester for an upcoming text. The new material is factoring by grouping. The student has a firm grasp of the topic and progressed through the homework with no issues. The test review was used to review previous topics from before the first tutoring session to ensure the student remembered and had a good understanding of the topics. The next session will be starting a new chapter and concept."
