"We worked on a revision of a paper on Hunger in America to help the student prepare APA formatted changes and check errors."
"The student brought his third version of his personal statement today and we went over it line by line again. I think it has reached its finished state. I made some suggestions. We then went over some vocabulary words and we took turns using them in sentences. We then had some connection problems, and I restarted my computer. The connection did go out twice before I did this. I added notes to his essay and I created a vocabulary exercise document for the student to review. He also has vocabulary homework, to write a unified statement with his vocabulary words. These words come from a list of SAT words online. We also discussed the wisdom of submitting his essay now before the actual deadline. I encouraged him to get it in right away, before the crowd."
"The student and I completed a review of his college application essay. He and I had been editing this essay for some time, and I think we made some really positive changes during our final time working on it. We paid attention mostly to the conclusion and introduction to put the final touches on the essay."
"This session continued a focus on summarization. The student was able to highlight the chief details in a simple outline upon further review of the Henson reading. The use of a dictionary and thesaurus helped him to construct his own brief summary, and to complete another reading comprehension test item. He showed enthusiasm for learning new vocabulary. The student was left with the task of writing two brief synopses for reading exercises from the same standardized test with which he is already familiar."
"The student and I listened to two different pieces from This American Life. For each piece, I had her follow along with the transcript and then we reviewed unfamiliar words and concepts. Then we listened again. After the second listening, we did additional work with the new vocabulary words that she identified."
"Today during our session we read the book "Hammerheads vs Bullsharks." The student felt really engaged and eager to learn during this reading. We focused mainly on reading strategies such as comparing and contrasting both sharks, using a graphic organizer such as a Venn diagram. We also worked on predicting and summarizing the story. Another skill we worked on was writing the letters "b" and "d" the correct way. He seems to get those two mixed frequently. I also left an extra reading passage for him to work on. The student was very focused today and did extremely well."
