Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over the student's recent Precalc work involving absolute value functions, functions of functions, inverse functions, and piecewise functions. We went over the student's recent worksheets as well as some quiz corrections. The student seemed to have some difficulty with functions of functions and piecewise functions, but he managed to have a good understanding of it by the end."
"The quarter just ended, so the student's class was focused on reviewing materials as opposed to anything new. He thus was not assigned homework for next class. We did however go through two quizzes and a test. He requested we review how to determine all the measurements of a triangle based off one angle and two sides using law of sines. After that, we moved on to the next section which we started last time: dot products. For this session, we managed to go through applications of the dot product: determining the angle between two vectors, projections of one vector onto another, and determining orthogonality."
"Today we covered a review of previous concepts within the trigonometry chapter. We practiced using trig identities to simply expressions and how to transform expressions into familiar forms to use trig identities while solving trig equations. His teacher has assigned a lot of homework and keeping up with it will be a challenge."
"The student has another quiz this Tuesday on section 6.3, parametric equations. In preparation for this quiz, she and I went over her homework and a worksheet that her teacher had given her. She understood the material very well."
"Today we worked on both precalculus and physics. Today was a shorter session, since they just finished a unit last week. In precalculus, we discussed logarithms and certain problems that she had issues with on the homework. In physics, we went over her lab worksheet, which consisted of kinetic energy, velocity, acceleration, and displacement with simple harmonic motion."
"The student and I continued to look at periodic functions. We examined the relationship between sine and cosine, how to represent the forms of these functions (amplitude, phase, period, etc.) and how to create these function from word problems.
I see that previous topics that were covered (the form of functions, algebraic manipulation, importance of units) are being applied as we cover new material, which is great. In general, I think he is making good progress. His commitment to regular meetings is also wonderful."

"We completed a homework assignment on using the rational roots theorem, synthetic division, and the quadratic formula to find the real and imaginary roots of a fourth order polynomial. With the remaining time, we continued to review conic sections. We did a problem on ellipses then covered drawing hyperbolas and determining the equation for a drawn hyperbola."
"We covered inverse functions and looked at how to generate them. We also looked at function composition f(g(x)) etc. and how to evaluate the functions, and we also revisited domain and range. The student learns quickly but is struggling most with retention. I'm continuing to encourage him to practice on his own as I think that is the best route to getting this stuff down."
" We covered Trigonometric Functions/Identities, Unit Circle, Converting Radians to/from Degrees, Special Triangles (306090 and 454590), CoFunctions (e.g. sin x = cos (90x), etc.)
The student was very attentive and picked up concepts very quickly"

"The student had a homework assignment that we completed together. The assignment focused on slopes. He was tested on his understanding of the slope formula, pointslope equation, slopeintercept equation, and graphing slopes. He was given different scenarios that combined all the concepts mentioned previously. Overall, he did fairly well. He sometimes struggles when it comes to dividing fractions, however, he was able to answer the questions completely on his own by the end of the session."
"We introduced the concept of exponential growth and decay, and we worked on doing modeling for compound interest and population changes. I then introduced logarithms to her. I left her with a few general sheets noting the general function forms and the change of base formula."
"The student and I did test review for her exam tomorrow. We solved explicit and logic log problems. We also used exponential formulas to calculate interest (simple and compound), investment value, and mortgage payments. We also used log rules to simplify various expressions. The student is doing very well."
