Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Wow! What a strong first session! The student and I covered fundamental math skills including adding/subtracting negative numbers, multiplying/dividing negative numbers, order of operations, factors (factor trees), factors and multiples, reducing fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers (and reversals), adding/subtracting fractions, multiplying/dividing fractions, percents, exponents and square roots, solving simple equations, manipulating simple equations, and manipulating inequalities. From the fundamental drills, we moved on to problems from the student's Upper Level SSAT Mathematics Test 1 Diagnostic, including geometry and equations of lines. Our next session will focus more on these areas. For homework, I instructed the student to continue work on his vocabulary (I'll send him a list to utilize alongside his current reference list) and further reinforce his mathematical skills by working the practice tests I send. This was a very fast-paced and enjoyable session! Our next session is scheduled for Friday."
"Student 1 received his results from the ISEE. His mom would like him to take a swing at the SSAT as a backup. We spent the lesson about half-half on vocabulary building and SSAT math review. He seemed to do much better on the math problems than he has in the past, but we will definitely find and strengthen as many weak points as we can. I also helped Student 2 prepare for his social studies test the next day, which was on the 13 colonies. He seems much more responsive to education that takes the format of a structured game than verbal discussion."
"In this session, the student and I did more work with percentages, talking specifically about solving proportions. We also practiced solving two-step equations, and we reviewed the properties of exponents. She is doing really well with exponents. She needs more practice with solving proportions by cross-multiplying. In this session, we also reviewed vocabulary and picked new vocab words. I gave her specific topics she should practice on the website over her break. She should also review all her note cards."
