Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent a good bit of time going over a vocabulary and fill-in-the-blank practice test on the learning tools page. He has a good bit of new vocabulary to work with, and we worked on test-taking strategies (predictive method, matching by tone, matching by context, matching/eliminating based on part of speech) during the practice test. We then worked on his essay due tomorrow. He's been given permission to contact me after hours to work on edits if necessary."
"The student requested help with her vocabulary as she has another quiz this week. To this end, we studied two rounds of flash cards. I am seeing an improvement in the student's retention and within her ability to think through memory blockages. We spent a good deal of time on Upper Level mathematics and skill sets within current class work, primarily, finding the vertex. We focused on two methods of solving quadratic equations: using the vertex formula and completing the square. This was a very strong session! I will send her a practice test as preparation for our weekend sessions."
"The student and I continued to prepare for the mathematics sections of the assessment. We worked through several practice questions. We spent time working on setting up problems, and I provided her with various ways to solve problems, like picking a random number for questions with only variables. she is a very fun student, and I enjoy working with her. For homework, she is to complete the homework I asked her to do last week and work on additional practice problems."
"We went over how the test is set up and test taking skills. We broke the test down into its sections and covered what to expect in each section. I then had her take a diagnostic test to identify her weaknesses. The student is very capable with math, but we will need to focus in on her verbal and writing skills."
"The student and I talked about test taking strategies and his general attitude towards standardized testing. I had him work on an ISEE diagnostic test. I will work to help him prioritize his homework, school work and test preparation. I look forward to helping him get the best possible score on the upcoming ISEE."
"We did a review that targeted math and quantitative skills. I took note of the student's increased performance on the reading and verbal in the last session in making my decision to focus more on math this time. I left the student to do problem sets pertaining to the topics we covered in algebra."
"We reviewed the practice ISEE that the student took last time. Her strongest section was definitely the Verbal Reasoning and her weaker section was Math Achievement, so we went through the Math Achievement section question by question. Something I noticed is that she had the skills to do almost ALL the questions she missed. Great job! We will meet once more before her test."
"Today I started the tutoring session with reading comprehension of poetry. By working with more complex text, I was able to help both students with abstract language, stylistic devices, setting, and time frames that they might encounter on the reading comprehension sections of the placement exams. I then had them work on a more traditional reading comprehension passage. They've certainly improved with these types of questions, but they can both use more practice, so I left them with an exercise to do this weekend. To finish the session, I had the boys work on math questions and timing, and I walked them through the questions they had problems with."
"She took the SAT Math Diagnostic and Verbal Diagnostic. We did additional practice in the areas where there was a low score. She is going to retake the tests between now and Friday. We will look at the Reading on Friday and address any other concerns in the other areas. I think that she is feeling better about taking the test now that she has a study strategy. We did discuss the kind of questions and the amount time that would be spent on each for the actual test. When she was taking the diagnostics today, we tried to stay true to that time."
"Today the student and I went over the rest of the example/sample problems from the online guide we found. We went over the rest of the math sample problems and also reviewed essay structure and technique. We talked a lot about how to write a good essay and used the sample prompts to construct some outlines for a solid essay. I assigned her to do the online practice test that came with what we were going over. I asked her to write an essay as well for next time."
"The student and I worked on more challenging passages for reading comprehension tonight. I will be placing an emphasis on this practice during our sessions. He will be working more independently on verbal practice. He is quite apt in math, but we will continue to practice geometry."
"Reviewed a selection of verbal and mathematics practice homework questions for the Upper Level section of the exam. Questions were taken from all areas of the exam. Spent time reviewing the usage and meanings of words that were not familiar to the student on the questions missed. Also reviewed each of the mathematics questions missed, explained the concepts behind each question, and wrote out the solutions."
