Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Yesterday the student worked exclusively on the reading comprehension section of the exam. We started by talking about strategies for reading (skimming, annotating, reading all questions first, coming back to the passage for specific information) and the types of questions he will encounter, and how to pick them out. We started with facilitated sets of questions, where he worked through questions, then moved to another set. Next, he did timed sets to see if he could manage the questions given a specific time period. After he had done all of the reading comprehension sets in his book, we moved on to the website. I think the material online is slightly more challenging than that found in the books. He did three sets, ranging in difficulty from easy to moderate, of which he scored with great accuracy. This was already a great improvement from his baseline reading comp scores. I left him to make flashcards for his second set of vocabulary, and to complete two online reading comprehension quizzes from the site."
"We spent this session working on a paper full-length practice exam. We will continue to work to improve reading comprehension, but all of his other skills are up to and beyond expectations. Overall, he is a great student to work with. For study skills, we continued to work on breaking down complex words into prefix-root pairings (this will be helpful in verbal and reading). I recommended working through the rest of the full-length test as extra practice."
"We covered a review of SAT Math problems, going over the problems in the prep guide. We went over all the problems the student did when he took this practice test two days ago. He also worked out of his green book, doing a number of practice problems from it as well. We covered coordinate planes, algebraic equations, probability, absolute value, circles, triangles in the coordinate plane, and other concepts. He paid attention the entire session and concentrated very well. He was given homework to work out of the test book, doing the middle level practice math tests."
