Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We focused on reviewing for her algebra II exam tomorrow. We solved quadratic equations for the vertex, x- and y-intercepts, axis, etc. She struggled with memorizing the quadratic equation, and we practiced memorization techniques as well as applying a problem solving method that requires her to re-write the equation she is going to use at the beginning of each new problem. We also reviewed factoring using the completing the square method in terms of fractions, whole numbers, and variables. We looked at graphing the given functions and identifying the maximums and minimums from the graph to estimate costs and numbers of passengers, etc., in word problems. She did very well today, and I have high hopes that she will perform well on her exam. I asked her to work on her definitions and memorizing the equations, and she assured me that she would."
"We completed the semester review packet that we had started going through in the previous session. We then started working through a set of problems on optimization and related rates."
"We reviewed for the student's exam on Monday. We mainly focused on word problems involving exponential growth and decay. We also did chemistry: stoichiometry problems."
"This first session consisted of seeing what the boys needed help with. Student A and I went over counting and letter recognition. Student B reviewed ratios and took a look at geometry. Both the boys were very easy to work with and eager to learn. This session went well."
"The student's biggest accomplishment was that she now knows over 100 sight words and counting! We are about 75% of the way through and we hope to finish learning them next week. I am planning to play games with her to continue to reinforce her knowledge of these sight words. Next week, we will begin talking about syllables and sounds within words. I feel that it will further extend her knowledge of sight words. We are still working through her knowledge of addition facts. I encouraged her to make sure that she practices while I am not working with her so that her fluency improves. I plan to bring games to help support her through learning her addition facts."
"The student and I worked on a variety of review topics, focusing on multiplication facts and some division. She also asked for help in other subjects, so we reviewed her English homework and recent content covered. Specifically, we reviewed parts of speech, grammar rules, and went over her homework which included correcting sentences. I gave her suggestions for focusing and calming during stressful situations or tests, or when her mind seemed to wander."
