"Today we covered topics from most of the sections on the ACT. In the English section, we did a quick overview of punctuation usage and making use of the vertical line test to help determine correct usage of punctuation. We then went over the most common structural error on the ACT, misplaced modifiers. We moved on to the math section, where we focused on algebraic questions. We then went over the last math practice test and worked out some of the questions. I concluded by leaving him with another practice test as well as some test-taking strategies."
"On his prior ACT, the student got a 21, which was an improvement over his original score. He wants to improve a lot more. His lowest scoring section was Reading, so we focused on that today. We went over a chapter from the ACT practice book discussing incorrect answer choices and various question types in the Reading section. We noted deceptive answers, "switch" answers, extreme answers, and "too nice" answers. We also went over vocab-in-context and roman numeral questions. We did a few math problems left over from a math practice test he had worked on earlier. Finally, we discussed the ACT essay. I outlined the structure of the essay and noted what material to put in each paragraph. We discussed thesis statements, specific examples, argument, and counterargument. We went over a few essay prompts and the student gave possible arguments for each side. For homework, I assigned him to write an essay on one of the prompts. He will also do some math and science homework."
"For today's session, we focused on science, reading, and math. The student had previously completed 5 science passages that we reviewed today. She is doing better with science, and she answered correctly 22/28 questions on the 5 passages. She is going to continue to work on her timing for this section, and I assigned 2 science passages for extra practice. Next, we discussed the reading section. The student has had difficulty with the timing in these sections, and we will continue to practice passages to help her complete this section on time. I assigned her 2 passages for extra practice, to be completed under timed conditions. Finally, we worked a bit on math. We focused on 2 topics that the student has difficulty with: y=mx+b from coordinate points and rate questions (i.e.. P=Po+rt). By the end of the session, she had a better handle on these topics, and we will be reviewing them next session as well."
