Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed for a test on polynomials, mostly practiced problems of long and synthetic division. Reviewed factoring and graphing as well as the remainder theorem."
"We completed exponential functions and then covered inverse trig and hyperbolic trig functions. We started applications of integration with area between two curves. I assigned him problems to work."
"Review for final. Covered a little bit of computational aspects (row reduction, etc.) and quite a bit of conceptual topics (recognizing isomorphisms between vector spaces, better understanding of bases, etc.)."
"I introduced antiderivatives to the student. We mostly worked on finding antiderivatives and knowing that there is always a constant left after taking an integral. We covered problems that asked to find the constant by giving us some information about the function and its derivatives. At first, he was not grasping the material, but then I explained everything to him, and he eventually understood how to solve these problems."
"Tonight we worked through a study guide for his upcoming test next Tuesday, and we scheduled another session to review before his test next week. Specifically we covered definite integrals and worked through many examples. We started by using the Riemann sum approach of adding up left and right endpoint rectangles, but moved on using the fundamental theorem of calculus. The student is improving on solving these problems on his own. We still need to work on identifying when and how to use the natural log function when integrating as well as some of the properties from pre-calculus in simplifying these log functions or evaluating trig functions after integrating. With respect to the calculus, however, he has the concepts down, and we will practice more next week to improve on reducing minor mistakes with respect to the calculations."
"The student did a great job today -- she was very engaged with the material (some sequence and series review, work on her IA, and some calc review). We have a good plan moving forward for studying for finals, and we will plan extra sessions over Skype as necessary if it turns out she has a calculus test in the upcoming weeks! She seems to be feeling okay with calculus in general; these are tricky concepts to grasp at first, and we are making good progress through the most important of them."
